Over 100 illegal schools have been shut down by the Abia state government across the state. The schools include primary, secondary and nursery schools.

The state government has sealed the premises of the affected schools while it has set up a tribunal to try the operators of the school.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Monica Philips, who disclosed this to newsmen at a briefing in Umuahia yesterday, said the illegal schools were used to perpetrate examination malpractices in the state.

She said “despite previous warnings to illegal private schools and advice that their operators upgrade them; they refused hence the decision to close them”.

Philips did not, however, disclose the exact number of schools affected by the closure, but noted that they “were hundreds”.

She said “officials of the ministry were still going round the state to identify other illegal schools”.

The commissioner also said only teachers or examination administrators who undergo training on examination ethics will be allowed to participate in the conduct of examinations in the state.

Philips said only those who participated and passed the examination administration Integrity and technical certificate workshop held recently in the state by the ministry, in conjunction with Exam Ethics Marshal International, would be involved in the conduct of school examinations in the state.

According to her, the measures are part of government’s effort to ensure that the standard of education in Abia remains high.

She said Governor Theodore Orji was in support of the ministry’s effort to ensure that examinations conducted in the state were credible and reliable, adding that the governor wanted the policy of zero tolerance for examination malpractices maintained in the state.

The schools should register with the state ministry of education if they meet minimum standards. If not, they should close down, or better still, two or more schools may merge to become stronger.

another source of loot. Indirectly, they should come and pay to make their schools legal. This payment ranges from one hundred of thousands to five hundred of thousands.this is the only thing that makes it legal(my friend's mum owns a school in aba,she paid 200k to register and a particular amount yearly)
This is not the problem of Abia state. The schools are even helping to get the kids educated,so why shutting them down. The legal ones, are they better?

Abia state is gradually waking up.
I served in Abia and know the sort of schools they have.
In Aba, owing a school is pure business, no interest of students at all.
Imagine a school with 100% corpers as teachers, and yet they are paid N5000.00, what happens then is that teachers are changed every 8months.
Some of the schools have less than 5 classrooms and still it is God's bla bla bla International school.

LWKMD.The truth is that those schools have not greased the commissioner's palms. They were temporary suspended pending when they will pay up. No school is closed in Aba where I live. It's just a threat. We are used to them.

Na wa for Abia govt. o! So, even nursery schools don dey do malpratise?! Shay.. Dem don dey write waec ni. BTW, Where were the govt when these schools were been operated years back. It's now they know that they're illegal. SMH!! Now, they wanna render thousands of children school-less. These are same children that paid school fees and had no idea whether the schools were registered or not. I'm one of those who want things to be done rightly in this country but making the masses suffer for what they know nothing about is not worth it. These children are about to write their exams; i think the head should have been blamed and santioned. Probably ask them to do the right thing which is to register the school properly. While they allow the schools affected to continue with their normal activities.

Dear Mrs Monica Philips,
why wouldnt private schools spout out like mushrooms when u & ur cousin, T.a. Orji has turned public schools into an eye-sore? Most of the so called mushroom schools are far better than the public schools. But i cease to wonder, b'cos such policies will benefit ur school, Britarch montesori, umuahia.
Please, quit the wild goose chase and improve the quality of public schools, as not all Abians can afford the exorbitant fees charged by ur private school. Stop fashioning policies that will suit ur school on the long run.
If this policy is born out of goodwill, then why is the same govt officials charging and collecting fees from these schools, returning their licences to operate even without them adding a single classroom block?
When u succeed in chasing ur competitors out of the labour market, parents that cant afford ur britarch will move to other states in search of quality education, as they're currently leaving Absu for other high institutions.
