Dear Poster, very few microbiology laboratories in Nigeria can tentatively say that MRSA was what was responsible for an infection. I will assume that the test results are accurate.

Having said that there are a few specific drugs out there to treat MRSA related infections including linezolid and dalfopristin.

If the labs were done accurately, they would have carried out a sensitivity after d culture. This tells you what drugs the organism is sensitive to or resistant against.

I had a patient recently with a MRSA infection that was sensitive to linezolid. I called several pharmacies and pharmacists but most didnt even know there was such a drug. Eventually I called d brand manager of a local drug company with an indian link (I do have a pack of linezolid - not for sale not purchased locally so I knew who to call).

Eventually I was told the drug was not yet approved by NAFDAC for distribution in Nigeria.

My client eventually had to order supplies from UAE via a friend that was travelling in. So this may be the only option for your friend.

By d way, my patient did absolutely well on linezolid tablets.

Best of luck

@op

It is important for your friend to be very compliant with his antibiotic regimen. There is no benefit to worry. If his wound is the only thing infected and not his bone, 6-8 weeks should be adequtae. If his bone is infected, he will get better but may have a recurrence.

MRSA can be treated successfully with Vanco. Only if it is VRSA do you need Linezolid.

Again, I would like to reiterate that compliance is a key to getting better.

I wish you both well.

The person that suggested vancomycin, I don't think that's such a good idea. The drug is quite toxic. I once used it in a child with cerebral abscess and I saw hell. I gave it as an infusion ie in normal saline and yet d kid acted plenty drama. Imagine if I had given bolus
Re: A Staph-Infected Fractured Leg Bone Patient Needs Urgent Help by studman: 10:31pm On Nov 14, 2012
-Intravenous Vancomycin could help tackle MRSA.The appropriate dose should be given because this medication is usually used as the last resort.

Could we make professional recommendations? There are many drugs active against MRSA but one cant sit down and say go and buy such and such.

poster, let ur friends' doctors make d best choice based on the result of the sensitivity of the MRSA culture...

I hope d moderator can delete stupid posts about garlic....

irresponsible of people to give false and misleading medical information...
Patient should go to a reputable hospital and be treated appropriately.
MRSA sepsis is no joke! Left untreated in the setting of a bone infection will inevitably result in an amputation.
Having treated patients with it myself i know for definite that you will need intravenous antibiotics for a number of weeks, in a setting where you can be monitored for adequate response to treatment and potential side effects.

who says graftin shortens the legs? except it is done by a quack!!! d bone must nt b extracted frm d fibular, d hip bone is mostly used durin graftin coz it grows back easily instead of d fibular

Alldruns: House pls help!

A colleague had industrial accident dis last July dat left him wt extensive wound & segmented tibia bone fracture, i.e. bigger bone of d lower part of d leg got broken wt a portion bone loss. He had since undergone several surgical operations: ex-fix, muscle flap, skin graft, DBR, etc. Though discharged, while expecting d remaining little portion of d wound to heal & dry completely b4 they talk of what 2 do wt d broken bone, he kept going 4 regular dressing.

D issue now is he was told lately dat he'll b re-admitted cos they discovered thru bone culture dat his bone was infected wt organism, clasified as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Dis they say we make him 2 b placed on antibiotics thru IV & dat nothing else wil b done until he completes all d dosage of it, say 6-8 weeks. He got little hint dat MRSA is incurable bt can only b managed. Dis got him so worried now dat he's almost emaciating.

Pls he'l like 2 know:
1. D effects of dis on his bone, either in d short or long run.

2. If there's any medication dat grows adult's bone faster: either oyibo drugs or local herbs. Or leave it for natural growth. He's abt 42yrs.

3. If dis MRSA wil have any consequence on his wife should they need 2 make luv later in future.

4. When d wound is eventually fully healed, d Surgeons are proposing doing bone graft on him & dis they said wil nt totally achieve their aim except d fibula (d leg smaller bone) is reduced. Obviously, dis wil shorten d leg in d final analysis. Is dis a good option 2 ever settled for?

Pls sir/ma, ur prompt & mature adv is highly appreciated.
Hi,
Where is your friend based? If its in the U.K, I will like to see him but it might be difficult because he may not be able to afford private treatment but I will recommend two colleagues of mine that works within the NHS.
One is Dr Mo Lahoti- he is as I knew based at Kings college hospital and with him he can combine with the team I had worked with in the past at St Thomas's hospItal. I believe they are the best hope for your friend within the NHS.
Pls am going out now, I will tell you more later please.

Dude can't be in the NHS. MRSA osteomyelitis would have had everyone running helter skelter to sort him out. It must be in our wonderful Nigeria!

Thank u all once again. Like I said in d main post, my friend is already undergoing 6-8wks IV antibiotics in a bone specialist hospital. He's now also monitoring dis thread religiously on his bed thru his phone: so all ur replies are additional sources of inspiration to him.

@senator2k9
no one said grafting shortens leg. They are PROPOSING they would like to shorten d fibular to compensate for d bone loss on d tibia being a segmented fracture. And dis wil result in leg shortening.
Re: A Staph-Infected Fractured Leg Bone Patient Needs Urgent Help by lolaluv1(f): 10:54pm On Nov 24, 2012
That's great news, sir.

I wish your friend the very best. I pray his healing comes quickly and completely.
Amen!

In a follow up. Thx all. I'v read of all ur candid adv. & concern 4 me. So, I decided 2 update u myself wt d same thread using my friend I.D (alldruns).

I just completed 8 wks of antibiotics via I.V: imipeniem, gentamacin, amicacin, etc & now being placed on oral which is to run for d nxt 3 full months. These are septrin (2 tablets x 3 times/day) & ciprofloxcin (1 1/2 x 2 times/day).

I get scared 2 hear of taking antibiotics tablets continuosly for 3 months. Pls Doctors in d hse, doesn't dis hv any side effects? Tho' d wound is almost fully dried now bt d bone aspect is still unattended to. Also, I force myself to eat dis days cos I've lost appetite

Pls hw do u pple see dis? Thx 4 being there once again.

Alldruns' friend (John)
