Look, somethings are just Trademarked regardless of what anyone does or says, so dont sweat it...
Eg: No matter how ignorant/dumb, crooked/corrupt, iliterate/wayward a group of Americans may portray themselves to be, on an international scene, it doesnt change the superior perception people have about their country... Why?? Dont ask me, adunno?
I guess Thats the part where you say; "life aint fair".

What we need to change is not perception but the real thing.

Our leaders have failed us over the years, 'Corruption had been institutionalized way back under Babangida's Regime' the psyche of most Nigerians is how to make it at all costs. Indeed, corruption is the biggest single employer of Nigerians today. Almost all categories of Nigerians, from the lowly to the mighty, from the young to the old, owe allegiance to it in one way or the other!

As soon as we change our individual orientation as Nigerians, our collective perception will not be begging for recognition.

Well that is quite posible, but will certainly take some time and may even require having to change that name "Nigeria"

If we bliv in ourselves and speak ☑ about each other, den maybe they'd have to question their judgements!

You can not change the perception. Tell me 5 things you can be sincerely proud of as a Nigerian. Let us leave being patriotic aside and face the facts.

This is simple common sense. The things you hear day by day in Nigeria is terrible.

Yes we can, how?
1. Be the change you want to see in Nigeria

2. Never speak negative about the president, the government and other leaders, try as much as possible to be positive at all times.

3. If you really wanna change Nigeria, start by changing yourself. Refuse to give or collect bribe, report fraudulent cases to the right agencies. In two words.... BE PATRIOTIC!

There's only one possible change in Nigeria, that's violent change. We can deceive ourselves all we want, but the fact are very clear.

@OP.. you can only change perception when you actually change your attitude and your actions, you cannot carry a Bible and sleep inside a brothel .. e no go work? You cannot preach Reforms and Anti-Corruption and still undermine reform efforts and allow corrupted Politicians to enjoy their ill-gotten wealth. You cannot complain about Corruption and Still go to CAMP to pray about it instead of doing something practical

our negative perception cannot be changed, i am afraid.....
nigerians are the most dishonest people on the planet. we are not even honest to ourselves not to talk of the way others see us. ordinary simple instruction, we mess it up!

for instance, passengers know you cannot carry more than 32kg of their luggage...this is set in stone, don't take more than 32kg or else you pay for extra. nigerians would pack 35kg or more and go to the airport to start begging! other nationals pack more than the accepted weight but they are always ready to pay for any extra - but not my fellow nigerians!

you would then see them passing shoes, clothes and other stuffs into the other bags just to reduce the weight and avoid paying for extra. when people are wired not to be honest to themselves, how do you expect the outsiders to perceive us? i dunno what is it about us, the genes, the genetic code or the water we drink but nigerians are just too shady to draw positive perception!

Our problems are way deeper than the things you've mentioned. You really need to watch Fox news and see the kind of bashing Obama gets from them. Still he tells you, they have every right to do so and as their president, his duty is protect their right to call him whatever they like. So you people should stop all these "Never speak negative about the president, the government and other leaders". One thing is certain, people will hate you no matter what you do, especially when you are serving the public. And if you feel you can't take the heat, then leave the kitchen!

Our system doesn't encourage positive change, it discourages it. Imagine somebody embezzled 10billion, he plea bargained and he's asked to refund 1billion.

It's not just perception, it is fact!! The average Nigerian is corrupt and has little regard/total disregard for rules and laws. No messiah or magic wand can turn this around..it is up to every individual in wherever we find ourselves to be the change we crave.

We can. Nothing is permanent and all things are ephemeral. We can make conscious effort by staying and acting positive and let it be known that negative utterances and unpatroitic tendencies as exhibited by most Nigerians especially the opposition groups can not but rather add to our woes.

Unless you want to blatantly lie and deny that some of these things that pop up in the news and the ones they already know, are not true. There's a limit to which you can sugarcoat a tarnished image. It gets even harder with new negative incidents involving Nigerians everyday and government level corruption showing no signs of waning.

This is simply being realistic.

Nigerians are waiting for someone else to change them. its unbelievable. Even the Police is waiting for an IG that will stop them from taking bribe.

Crazy mentality.

There's no 'negative perception' really.
Most of the things written about Nigeria are true.
Re: Can We Actually Change The Negative Perception about Nigeria? by londoner: 2:49pm On Nov 26, 2012
OP....of course. The perception will change when their experience of Nigerians change.

Also, when good Nigerians stop hiding the fact that they are Nigerian because they are ashamed.

Other countries, like America ACTIVELY launder their image and control perception of them. Not only to non Americans but to Americans too. They constantly churn out an image.....a good one, to counteract what other negative facts are revealed about them.

Americans adopt this image of themselves and what it means to be an American and actually live out those values.

Even in war, America can bomb a community, but also drop food parcels from planes, with the US flag on every package.

Look at Hollywood.....it is not just entertainment, it is a political tool.

The story lines always perpetuate a positive image of America in relation to the rest of the world.

Nigeria and Nigerians buy into the opposite.......they will only believe negatives about Nigeria and go around spreading that image either in their words or actions.

I cant tell you the amount of damage I have had to undo in the minds of non Nigerians, simply because of the negative account Nigerians have fed to them.

Nigerians need to learn how to shut the eff up about the bad things of Nigeria when speaking to non Nigerians, unless they are prepared to end on a positive note about the country in that conversation.
