Maitama District Abuja: A Simple Intro by Abujafood: 10:10am On Dec 05, 2012

Maitama is one of the most exclusive places to work and reside in Abuja. It’s home to many of Abuja’s super rich and powerful. The bulk of foreign embassies and missions are based in Maitama. One thing this district is especially known for is it’s very expensive accommodation and generally higher cost of living. But Maitama has very good roads, working street lights and it’s a safe part of town recording relatively lesser incidents of crime owing also to heavy presence of police and other security personnel.

Land Marks

The Maitama Amusement Park, the millennium Park, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, NCC head office, the Dunes, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama General Hospital and Circles Garden among others. Popular streets in Maitama include Gana Street and Aguiyi Ironsi way.

Social Life

Social life in Maitama is a subtle in-the-know affair, mainly because it is a highly exclusive part of town The Summerset hotel is a popular place for high end gatherings, The Bamboo house, a boutique hotel that has quickly grown into a social hangout houses an a great bar, restaurant and Juice bar. There are a few shopping malls in Maitama such as the popular 911 Mall and the 212 Supermarket on Usuma Street, the Linkers and The Mall on Gana Street, Exclusive Stores to mention a few.

Economic Activities

Maitama is home to head offices of many government agencies such as INEC, NYSC, NCC, EFCC and NUC to mention a few. It’s also home to most of the foreign embassies and missions. It’s not very common to spot local businesses in maitama but the few that exist are very expensive and beyond the reach of most people, therefore expect them to cater to the needs of high income earners.
