The FRSC says it will begin a campaign to reverse the trend.
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has said the South-East geopolitical zone records the highest number of road crashes in Nigeria every year.
The RS-5 Zonal Commander in charge of Edo, Delta and Anambra, Wole Olaniran, made the disclosure on Tuesday during the commission’s awareness campaign in Awka. He, however, did not provide the statistics to back the claim.

Mr. Olaniran, who was represented by his deputy commander, Sobowale Gbenga-Oke, however, assured the public that the commission is working hard to reduce the trend.
“The crashes in the zone are enormous; for one month, beginning from December 15, we are going to be on the roads to checkmate this; that is what we have come out today to tell the people.
“The commission has put machinery in motion to check the heavy traffic from Onitsha Bridge-head in Anambra, down to Delta and Edo, in making sure that we tackle this issue of road crashes,” he said.

The Anambra State Commander of the FRSC, Hygenius Omeje, told newsmen that the essence of the campaign is to intensify awareness on safer roads for all.
“This is the last lap of the campaign which deals with changing the attitude of our people and besides this campaign, we will hold a seminar in collaboration with the Anambra State Transport Association on safety measures,” he said.

The Zonal Coordinator of Special Marshals Unit of the FRSC, Raphael Asekume, urged officers to turn out en-mass on all major roads in the zone to ensure free flow of traffic during the yuletide.
The officers of the commission also distributed stickers with inscriptions such as “the wages of over loading and reckless driving is untimely death” and “Okada-man drive to stay alive”.
The motorcade of the commission moved through the major roads in Awka and markets to create the awareness.

I can bet the main cause of accidents are the poor state of roads in the SE. Most of the ones I've driven on there are death traps

Its no surprise. Afterall where you find the worst federal roads in Nigeria are in South-East. Enugu - Onitsha and Enugu - PH roads are roads made in HELL.
