A fatal accident occurred on Wednesday when a granite- carrying truck rammed into students who had just closed from school. About eight students were feared dead from the accident which occurred in Itori village of Ogun State. The victims are believed to be students of Itori Comprehensive High School, located in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the State. The accident occurred when the truck swerved off the road. It led to a violent protest by the victims’ colleagues, who smashed vehicles and destroyed several property on sight. A witness said the truck, with registration number LAGOS XZ 628 AKD, was coming from Abeokuta, the state capital, when it veered off the median. Some of the protesters also complained about the late arrival of the security and rescue officials to the accident scene. Many motorists plying the road, located along the old Abeokuta- Lagos road, could not hold back tears on arriving at the scene. As at the time of filing this report, an Armoured Personnel Carrier, belonging to the Ogun State Police Command arrived at the scene of the accident, to restore order preparatory to the evacuation of victims. Given that Nigerians are gripped with fear and insecurity, is it not advisable to ban all sorts of driving in the country? Taking somebody's life is never acceptable but taking the lives of innocent school children is tantamount to a crime against humanity. Banning driving will bring Nigeria to a stand still. We need this break to reflect on our future as a nation. |
