Dutse—Each police check point along Kano-Jigawa highway make an average of N100,000 daily from the compulsory N20 ‘toll’ they collect from motorists travelling on the road, which leads to other north eastern states. No fewer than 5,000 vehicles ply the road daily.

Vanguard findings revealed that motorists pay the bribe to avoid being delayed by those manning the checkpoints. Those who fail to pay are delayed until they comply.

The checkpoints, which were re-introduced because of terrorists’ activities, have been turned into fast money-making avenues by the Police officers.

A commercial vehicle driver, Malam Abdullahi, lamented that most drivers were compelled to pay the fee as any attempt to resist the payment could infuriate the policemen into keeping the ‘’culprit’’ for a longer time. He added that commercial drivers spend between N120 and N140 at the various checkpoints on each trip between Jigawa and Kano states.

He said their union leaders once took a decision that drivers should stop paying money at the checkpoint. He said the action could not last more than 48 hours as they had to pay or park by the road side, wasting valuable time.

Vanguard also gathered that the police officers, who perpetrate the act, were posted from other states and were neither under Jigawa nor Kano states police commands.

That's the only thing Nigerian police is perfectly and extremely good at. Egunje. You can never separate Nigerian police from egunje. Even at death.

soldiers too have joined them! some of those checkpoints are manned by soldiers and you just have to travel on those roads to realise that both soldiers and police are in the game.

nigerians and their wicked hate for her police. Among those egg-head pushing and making such obnoxious headline, who of such animal has ever thought it wise or bring to the front banner the persistent, regular and ceaseless kilings of our galant, able, stern and agile policemen? We only look at the negative side of this men what about their impact to the society? Can u the maker of this headline, go and face terorist in Nigerias north-east and come back alive? Let us stop projecting the image of this galant men in bad light. We shud rather give them the neccesary encouragement that wil galvanize their morale in an objective way.

Abeg, leave dis ppl along. They r d ones that sold their lives in order to save us and protect our properties. Which of the so-called leader can even take care of someones responsibility, let alone protecting his life and properties. Those of u saying that, ''they r corrupt'' dosnt knw what happnd in the north, more especially yobe and borno. There was a time when these cities were not habitable, because evry one fleed, but these men stays there, figthing the terrorists, and at the end they won the war. That was when ppl started cming back from the villiges. So these men were even underpaid, cox their always on death row.

I don't have any problem with the police collecting 20 naira, If it will help them do theIr job. After all that money is nothing compared to what politicians, oil marketers and civil servants steal from our treasury in one second.

Someone once said, after oil and our border security operatives (custom and immigration officials) our police comes third as the largest earner provided their 'hol it bribe' is contributed to the nation's coffer! Those guys are making a hell of a money on a daily basis. If a major road is making a 100000naira daily (which I know is much more) how much more other major roads in d country and by the way, I tot d IG had banned illegal checkpoints undecided **tomakint sings, Nigeria I hail thee......**

You make me laugh in French.

So we should encourage corruption in our police force because they are the target of Boko Haram boys abi? Is that how people in civilized nations encourage their police? I thought they signed a contract of life and death to protect the citizens of this land, so when did #20/#50 bribe turn to a form of encouragement?

A proverb in Yoruba land says: "Instead of you to say what the thief did is wrong, you blame the owner for not keeping his property well".
