The Nigerian Army has retired dozens of its Generals and tens of Colonels from its ranks, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

A source told this paper Saturday night that the officers have been directed to proceed on terminal leave preparatory to their final disengagement from service.

The retirement came just days after the Nigerian Army Council, headed by President Goodluck Jonathan, approved the promotion of 59 top officers.

The Wednesday promotions saw 22 Brigadier Generals promoted to the rank of Major Generals and 37 Colonels to the ranks of Brigadier Generals.

The identities of the officers affected by the retirement and the reasons for their sack were not clear Saturday night.

The spokesperson for the Army, Brigadier General Bola Koleosho, could not be reached to comment for this story.

But the Director of Defence Information, Mohammed Yerima, told PREMIUM TIMES the retirement was part of the routine reorganisation in the military.

Mr. Yerima declined to provide further details, saying he was on vacation.

I dont want believe it is connected to 2015 going by the 22 MG newly promoted.

NOO!! GEJ is scared of a coup!

If senior officers carry out a coup, it will be really deadly because they will have no shared authority shared with anyone outside the coup meaning totalitarian power.

But GEJ's intention is just simply being scared of a coup! He knows his administration is really bad and a coup is bound to happen. But retiring generals won't stop them from planning a coup through their loyals in the military!
