Barely one week after the convoy of the governor of Kogi state was involved in a ghastly motor accident which claimed the life of the governor’s ADC, another tragedy struck yesterday when the convoy of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Momoh Jimoh Lawal, was involved in an accident along Okene- Lokoja road.

The crash, which an eye witness attributed to reckless driving by an articulated truck, also claimed the life of a police constable attached to the Speaker.

We gathered that the Speaker was returning from Okene when a long truck knocked off his last back-up car in which Constable Akeem Lamidi and others were travelling. Lamidi was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja for treatment before he gave up the ghost.

While receiving treatment at the hospital, Lamidi, who hailed from Erin Ile in Oyun local government area of Kwara state, was quoted to have expressed gratitude to God for sparing him.

But he died at the Medical Centre yesterday.

It was gathered that before he died he was said to have shouted, “They have come! They have come!”

The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Austin Akubo, who confirmed the death of the police escort yesterday, said the Speaker was unhurt.

He pointed out that it was not the Speaker’s car that was involved in the crash, but the one attached to the police escort.

He said: “The Speaker’s vehicle was not affected. He is hale and hearty.

“The Speaker, Alhaji Momoh Jimoh Lawal, was ready to take him to the best hospital in Nigeria for the best medication, but unfortunately he gave up the ghost this morning.”
