Wish I had anything to chip in on the cable issue @ 4ller --------- But guys una be oga for this Ubuntu o. , Konboot - can be used to byepass windows log on |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 11:04pm On Jul 30, 2010 |
Konboot is magical!!! and d best part of it is dat its so small, it takes like 1 second to burn to a CD. most of d time, i forget to report about things like this when i find out about them and only after someone else posts it dat i remember and chip in so, i'm chipping in u can find it @ http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/ enjoy. on a different note, i've been thinking about us creating a blog for nglug. it could be hosted on blogger (or wordpress) and have a redirect to a URL like www.nglug.com.ng or something like that but we'll have to figure out who will pay d hosting fees . anyway, we all that post here on a regular basis could be admins on d site and we get to post tutorials that will be useful to beginners and even advanced users on linux and other FOSS software. we would then direct anyone seeking info to those places. it could also serve as a way to connect pple to d closest linux geek to their vicinity for personal assistance. it could also be used to distribute free CDs, aggregate useful links we have collected on d net over d years and arrange them under relevant headings etc. the posibilities are endless. . something similar to what i describe exists (or existed) but it seems to nolonger be actively revised (i think it actually sprang out of this same thread). u can check it out here http://ubuntunigeria./ last post was sometime last year. oh and just as a disclaimer, if we actually do this, there'll have to be some boundaries , like no post on how to setup Y-F (dont want my post deleted hence d hyphen) on ubuntu or something like that. what do y'all think about this? can we get guys to commit/ fork out cash for a URL / post useful things / spread d word / etc.? i was also thinking of using something like a planet http://www.planetplanet.org/ http://planet.ubuntu.com/ that'll aggregate blog posts related to linux from our personal blogs but i reasoned that i dont tink most of us keep personal blogs at least not one linux/ubuntu centric (i know i don't) so i fell back on d blog idea. just brainstorming here so guys, let me know what u tink, fail or brilliant or impracticable etc. lets here it! |

Another credit to Open Source ______ @ Muyiscoi: It is a good idea. You can go further by having Remote Tech support for Ubuntu. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:32pm On Jul 30, 2010 |
hmmnnn muyi nice idea. i would be game, if and only if the blog never loses its way, cos from that point onwards i will miss. anyway, i dont keep a blog, just never got round to it and i probably would post irrelevancies there sef lolz. lets see how it goes, but then we can get free hosting no? wordpress etal? for the konboot, hmmn, well but cant u get access to a drive with a live cd? i do that with no issues, whether passworded or not!!! hmmn anyway, im guessing it allows u to remove the password? i will try it out sha! |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 1:46pm On Jul 31, 2010 |
@4llerbuntu yes u can get free hosting but it will be . which doesnt feel very professional to me IMO. we can always start from somewhere though. so, what's d consensus? plus, did anyone check out d link for d other site? here it is again in case u didnt http://ubuntunigeria./. as for konboot, its not for accessing windows partition. its for logging into windows without knowing the password. u can check d site for a better explanation but from d way i grab it, it acts as a bootloader for windows which does some voodoo to d windows kernel while it is booting thereby not requiring u to enter a password. so if all goes well, u slot d CD into ur drive n it boots up windows for u up to d desktop without needing to enter password. I should point out here that i've never actually used it b4 myself. might try it out now though. |

Battery-life on Ubuntu My 2 year old Dell Latitude D630 lasts 3.5 to 4 hours on Windows 7 (wifi off, lowest screen brightness, low cpu load). But on Ubuntu Lucid, it barely manages 2 hours b4 going off. Given the current NEPA situation, I find this completely unacceptable and it's now the main reason why I still boot into windows. Ubuntu doesn't seem to have any simple, built-in way to reduce eye-candy and clock speed in order to improve battery life like in Win Vista/7. Are there any good power management tools that I can use to do this? I remember that there used to be something like that in Mandriva but I'm not sure if it was a separate program or built into KDE. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 7:39pm On Aug 03, 2010 |
that is a major issue for most people. power management on linux is to be perfectly honest, lacking behind other OSes. there are tools however and i came across one not too long ago called jupiter. it was made to optimize netbook power usage but should work just fine for laptops too n it should be a breeze to in stall (provided ur using GNOME). i havnt actually tested it so i dont know how good it is but here is d link to a blog post on it with install instructions. maybe u can let us know if it helps after installation http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/jupiter-ubuntu-ppa-hardware-and-power.html |

My precious 4 hour life battery lost 1 hour. The problem could be applicable to the particular laptop I am using. HP 6735s I will switch to my pavllion if it maintained the right battery life. |

True but I imagined how many things I can do that 5 minute while posting. It is fair. It is a work in progress. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:17pm On Aug 04, 2010 |
aww, i know i saw a solution somewhere. unfortunately my internet is not working now so i cant hunt it down. but even me never got round to using it too. guess i forgot. yes the power thing is not too good, and it seems its just not a priority for devs. u cant blame them, they live in enviroments where outages is a non-occurring phenomenon and even when mobile you can get somewhere and hook up power with little fuss which even reminds me, my power management thingy doent work!! my laptop deosnt hibernate when battery is low it just goes off, i think i set it to 10% but doesnt work. i have to shut down myself b4 it gets that low!! |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 9:11pm On Aug 04, 2010 |
yeah. mine didnt used to hibernate till like 9.10. it doesnt sleep yet though |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 12:11pm On Aug 06, 2010 |
sup pple @ lynx dont mean to raise ur hopes but i think i may have found the solution to that wine/connectivity thingy. it has to do with installing stuff with winetricks script. havent tried it, dont think i will have time till sunday but i got stuff from oe of my long hikes in the hack worlds underground. there an a exe app for viewing coded streams online, works fine in windows, the maker says he tried it in mint with wine and that it works. he gave a how-to, short, basically install WMP10 and some stuff (.ocx files) register them and pronto. im dying to try it too, but have to chill till sunday. im occupied otherwise. but then have u ever tried starting any networking app with sudo in terminal? sudo wine bal bla bla? cuz i was able to use IWP with sudo (didnt work as normal user) and it made me wonder if those exe will network with sudo have fun pressing ur keyboard furiously |

This has happened to me a lot in d past in different forms but it happened again 2day n i decided to post about it. you do realize you could have easily achieved the she same thing much quicker on any (windows)system, no? hiding real folders and replacing them with exes with a folder icon is the oldest trick in the book of viruses. . . to rectify(windows), simply go to folder options>view>then select show hidden files/folders>>deselect hide protected operating system files>deselect hide extensions for known file types(to identify file-types quicker)OK. OR go to cmd then type the letter of the drive followed by a colon i.e- "f:". then at the drive prompt type "attrib -h -s". either method would make your explorer window display hidden/system files(viruses masquerade as them). Then use the run function(winlogo+R) to open the drive by typing in the letter assigned to it followed by a colon, i.e run "f:". this method prevents the system from getting infected via the virus' autorun.inf file. DO NOT open an infected drive by double/right clicking it! Then simply delete all unfamiliar executables/folders. Restore "real" folders by rightclick>properties>uncheck the "hidden" checkbox in the attributes section. The autorun file is harmless on it's own. You can keep it as a souvenir 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:49pm On Aug 07, 2010 |
@ritch would have said the same thing myself - though maybe not so detailed; all files are always visible on all my pcs and whenever i'm doing that attrib thingy people thimk==nk i'm doing something really difficult; i think microsoft spoiled us with the windows thing, remember the days when anyone who knew how to use a computer KNEW how to use a computer -not like in these days of drag and drop |

Good Idea, Muyisco. UbuntuNigeria was co-managed by myself, Bigbrovar and Adewale but as real life got busy, we failed to keep it updated. I wouldn't mind rekindling the project, though. -[n3rve] |

wud be great to have ubuntunigeria. truly truly great. by the way, can anyone recommend a good gui based, graphical bandwidth monitor for ubuntu. i need to monitor my glo modem connection. and a question? any idea why ubuntu and linux generally is so unpopular here in nigeria? 1 Like 1 Share |

thought d discussion was dead. nice to see u guys still like d idea. have been quite busy d past few days but i think we can give it a go now. maybe, we could just continue using ubuntunigeria on wordpress if we can get the admin details for it. @[n3rve] could u help us out with that?. we'll have to have at least 3 guys committed to posting stuff at least intermittently. u can also post links to interesting sites, e.t.c. do i hear someone say i commit? |
