Thanks man, it is working now. I am just resisting the temptation of going back to window. Under window you just click and every thing just work. It is just that determination to try some thing new, and i am not being disappointed

im in love!!!!!! wink wink wink wink wink wink with songbird

after it has been discontinued for linux cry cry cry cry cry cry

wellz, actually i started having this strange problem with my media players namely banshee (my fav) and rhythmbox. they have taken to crashing religiously. i have tried completely uninstalling and purging and then restarting to install to no avail.
frustrated, i then tried songbird! so far so good, i love the extensions and all, really useful too!

it is well, a mashup of a browser (firefox) and a music player!! and man am loving it, and wondering why i never tried it b4!!. the ease of playing music in one tab and browsing in anor tab just seems to make sense now all of a sudden!!!!
to the discontinued part, well the songbird team say they are no longer updating the linux builds, which i guess leaves us stuck with the v1.2 currently in the repos, but hey nonetheless e still dey kampe!! grin grin grin

heard about a package called preload?

Preload is nice little application that could make your linux system a lot more snappier. Preload is an adaptive readahead daemon. It monitors applications that users run, and by analyzing this data, predicts what applications users might run, and fetches those binaries and their dependencies into memory for faster startup times.

Preload packages are available for almost all linux distributions. And it is available by default in the Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu. Alternatively, you can install it via Terminal.

sudo apt-get install preload

cheers, till i come again, someone pls keep this thread alive its becoming embarassing!! undecided undecided undecided

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 4:18pm On Oct 07, 2010
nah, well not from me sha.

and get used to these funny fact: 10.04 is past news, 10.10 is dropping in 3 days, and THAT will be the new flavor here, at least for a freak like me!!

i intend to start pulling the DVD and not cd from 10.10, so help me God!! so maybe in like 6 days time i shld have a 10.10 DVD

for packages, well even the DVD has only main and restricted repos o, not everything but at least with that u can get up with no wahala.

u may otherwise try to get someone who has a lot of apps to make u an APTONCD disc with the packages!!

I used ubuntu 10.04, i carried out the repair using terminal, the problem i did a mistake while specifying tthe partions. And the problem now is that tthe live cd does not even load on my systen again, it just keep loading ubuntu till eternity and i have my entire backup on that partion.
Thanks in anticipation
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 10:03am On Oct 08, 2010
the livecd not loading? thats not possible unless ur cd drive is bad, or RAM is bad or the livecd itself!!

unless there is something else wrong. does your windows partition work fine? if it does, no problem get this software:   http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2read/files/Ext2read%20Version%202.2%20%28Latest%29/ext2explore-2.2.71.zip/download

unzip it and use. it does not install, just make sure if you are on vista or win7 right click on it and run as administrator. it will enable u view and copy out files from EXT partitions. copy out your files into the windows partition.

then u may re-install ubuntu.

NB, try testing the cd for defects!!

then i think maybe we should put up a grub repair how-to permanently
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 10:13am On Oct 08, 2010
Fix your grub2 after Windows (Ubuntu installed 1st) installation for dual or multi boot with Ubuntu:

Tool required:
Live CD Ubuntu

Procedure:

* Boot using your live CD

* Select " Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer "
* Once you've login to desktop run Terminal ( Application > Accessories > Terminal )

* Change to root, using this [enter only red lines] command in Terminal:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo -i
root@ubuntu:~#

* Find partition location of your Ubuntu:

root@ubuntu:~# fdisk -l

example output:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x10031003

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 6374 51199123+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 6375 19457 105089197+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 6375 11473 40957686 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6 11474 19457 64131448+ 83 Linux <--- Here

* Create mount-point for ubuntu's partition

root@ubuntu:~# mkdir /media/root

* Mount the partition using this line:

root@ubuntu:~# mount /dev/sda6 /media/root

* Confirm your root location by typing this line:

root@ubuntu:~# ls /media/root

example output
bin dev initrd.img lib32 media proc selinux tmp vmlinuz
boot etc initrd.img.old lib64 mnt root srv usr vmlinuz.old
cdrom home lib lost+found opt sbin sys var

if those line above appear, you may proceed by installing GRUB 2:

root@ubuntu:~# sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/root /dev/sda

it should give no error messages!!

* Reboot your system! remove the livecd!!!

No Windows ?
No worries,

* Boot to your ubuntu
* Run Terminal to update GRUB2 so that grub able to identify mount-point location for Windows. This can be done by typing this command in Terminal:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub2
[sudo] password for ubuntu:

example output:
Generating grub.cfg ,
Found Debian background: apollo.tga
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-15-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-15-generic
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1
done

Try reboot again & you should be able to see Windows at Grub menu.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Obeledu: 1:28pm On Oct 08, 2010
Hello I am back with another problem:

I am dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Window Vista on my laptop.
My internet connection require proxy setting.
When using synaptic update manager I connect to the internet without problem because the proxy setting is okay.
My problem is when i do sudo apt-get update I always get error 407 proxy authentication required.

I have done the following, I added the following to the /etc/bash.bash.rc

export http_proxy="http://Johno:Johnb@haproxy.haisa.net:8080/"
export ftp_proxy="http://Johno:Johnb@haproxy.haisa.net:8080/"

Where Johno=my username
Johnb=my password
haproxy.haisa.net=the name of the proxy server

Please is there anything i am doing wrongly. I have research on internet for the solution but found no solution.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:26pm On Oct 08, 2010
i take it ur using a corporate connection and you require a username and password for the proxy?

i dont think 10.04 needs you to manually edit bash.rc anymore!!!
that used to be a bug that was cured in 9.10

why not just use the gui's instead. take it from the top.

remove the proxies u have set anywhere and everywhere.
run "unset http_proxy"

restart the pc. try to verify if all your apps are no longer going thru that proxy. then set the general proxy in network proxy and synaptic proxy in synaptic too. they both now have places to input username and password if required.

lets try that and see before we start doing kung-fu. this bug is really old, i was battling with it in 9.04
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Obeledu: 3:48pm On Oct 08, 2010
Thanks for the reply,

GUI works fine, it is just that it also good to learn how to do it using command line. most of the solution available on internet require  you to type sudo apt-get. it is always annoying if you cannot get it right.

the issue is that i did not see the desktop folder from the explorer
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:05am On Oct 09, 2010
u should o. if u run as admin, u should double click on the drive.

take ur time to look at the folders, like i said, the ones with . before their names are system folders normally hidden, ur own folders should be further down towards the end

or is it giving some kinda error msg?

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:08am On Oct 09, 2010
otherwise if this is not working, u have to get another good live cd.

i dont know of any other safe way of working on EXT4 partitions from windows
