A Nigeria Without Oil by Afam4eva(m): 8:47pm On Jan 12, 2013
I was not born in the era when the west depended on proceeds from cocoa. When the east developed itself from the proceeds of palm products and the North were self sufficient with the groundnut pyramids. So, i don't know how things were then. Despite the fact we have oil and it is our mainstay, the country doesn't seem to be moving forward. Imagine a Nigeria without oil with the same attitude from the ruling class. Wouldn't that spell doom? Are we not going to be ranked among the poorest countries in the world.
Re: A Nigeria Without Oil by Nobody: 9:03pm On Jan 12, 2013
if nigeria were to be an oilless nation, probably the name Nigeria would have ceased to exist and Lord Lugard's girlfriend would have been crying in her grave.Nevertheless,Oil is still what makes nigeria an entity.

Imaging nigeria without oil, i can assure you that nigeria won't be operating on the so-called constitution we have now.
Remember this local adage (awoof dey run belle) that is why most of them(leaders) are misbehaving.

“Nigeria's national budget is 5 trillion Naira? Nigeria is not a poor country then, Nigeria is a miserable country. Five trillion Naira would be something like 33 billion USD or some 25 billion Euros. And this is the national budget of a 52 year old nation of some 160 million people! Now, factor in the endemic corruption and you'll have a nation screwed forever…Taiwan, precisely earned 25 billion USD in 2011 from the sales of only Notebook Computers. South Korea in 2010 joined the clubs of nations earning more than 300 billion USD per year exporting value added finished high tech products. And these are little nations in terms of population and geographical space. On our side, we are drunk and drowning in a freely produced natural product, oil. And this oil is extracted by foreigners. Pathetic!”
Re: A Nigeria Without Oil by GAR3TH(m): 10:09pm On Jan 12, 2013
Well there are many developed nations who do not have oil talkless of any natural resources, but at the same time there are many developed nations that do have oil etc. On the other side of the coin you'll find that alot of undeveloped nation dont have natural resources and some undeveloped nations do have natural resources.

whether or not a nation has natural resources does not matter at all. Regardless of resources, every developed country has something in common, committed leaders who are willing to help the masses and masses who are willing to hold their leaders accountable. On the other side, you have undeveloped nations which have one thing in common, corrupt leadership and citizens who dont hold them accountable.

The reason why early nigeria was thriving was because we had good leadership and the masses held them accountable. I wont say that Nigeria will be better off without oil, but I will say that oil did cause the Nigerian government to become lazy and corrupt.

This is really not a case of being able to develop without oil but a case of laziness of the Nigerian government to create wealth outside oil. Oil is our main source of revenue and no other sector comes close and that it because we have resigned to depend on oil and it has made us very lazy. I see a situation whereby this laziness will continue without oil or at least it will take a very long time for us to recover.

^^^On the budget- don't forget that about 70% of that annual budget (meant for a population of about 160 million) is for recurrent expenditure (salaries and overheads) to service the needs of a couple hundred thousand (mostly lazy and underemployed) peeps; and digging deeper, you'd find that the national assembly has already reseved their own cut of close to $1 billion for their gluttonous needs in 2013....and the executive better not touch a cent of this money angry or there'll be hell to pay.

So we the 'lesser mortals' are now left to fight for the crumbs that have fallen from masters table.

Double pathetic!!
Re: A Nigeria Without Oil by Nobody: 10:30pm On Jan 12, 2013
There wnt be a Nigeria wtout oil! Oil is d basis for our unity. Oil is also d bane of our development. Shld ds oil dry up 2day, those dat profoundly profess and propagate 'one Nigeria' will recoil into their shells. Only then shall we start tellin ourselves d truth of our existence and development wtout recourse to 'unity or peace' Till den, let us continue to bask in d ambience of our pretended con3!

How can nigeria survive without oil? is like asking if u can start a car with zero petrol tank, as in last year 100 million nigerians are living in poverty.Without oil&gas Nigeria will be a disaster.Without oil only if their was no corruption/tribalism and the country currency strong and stable, then u will see many more foreign investors in all parts of the country, agricultural sector will be booming, power sector will be steady and stable, good security, hospitals, roads.

However, the country might not last because the nature of nigeria as a union need to be questioned, i dont think people really understand what it means by "one nigeria" some see other fellow Nigerians as invaders that come to take over their land or jobs with that attitude the country will still divide eventually. But oil is delaying the process at the moment some sections cannot survive without oil cool

there are a lot of countries without a drop of oil, with relative increase in gdp, infrastrure improvements.
our mindest had been skewed toward expectating revenue frm oil , reason we will remain under developed.
look at most african countries with so called natural resourses and still impoverished.
example is central african republic with one the most given natural resourses on earth and cant even govern itself talkless of feeding her populace.
with good leadership at the elm of affairs we dont need oil, whats the quantity of oil in iceland, norway,?.

I think we have to imbibe the culture of developing without oil because it will be disastrous if we're caught unaware.

Can a politician in nigeria ever dream of this kind of embezzlement if the nation lives on agricultural export alone?

If Nigerian becomes a non-oil producing country, what will happen is that the thieves that have plundered our resources for decades will leave the scene because they feel nothing can be good as oil money. That will give way for the people who are dedicated to developing the country. But it will take time before they get NIgeria running again.

Before the discovery of oil, cash crop contributed greatly to the GDP,the emergency of oil led to the abandonment of the agric sector, and concentration only on oil as our major revenue generation.

The discovery of oil has its shortcomings, which includes:high corruption, pollution, civil unrest, emergence of terrorist, etc. Despites that, the discovery has also helped greatly in terms of development.

Nigeria can exist without oil,but Ȋ̝̊̅† will slow our level of development, cos most advanced nation are oil producing nation.
