Sanusi Wants Arewa, Ohanaeze, Afenifere, JNI, CAN Banned

16 Jan 2013

CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

In another no-holds-barred social commentary bound to raise dust, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Monday night, called for the ban of Arewa Consultative Forum, Ohanaeze, Afenifere, Jamatul Nasril Islam (JNI) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

His statement came on the heels of another one made by the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, who said security challenges in the North had set the region on fire, while the former chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Alhaji Ahmed Joda, accused political leaders of overheating polity and tearing the country apart.

The three of them spoke at the dinner organised by the Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) where Sanusi, who was one of the guest speakers, said such bodies are no longer religious or cultural in nature but political associations masquerading as socio-cultural or religious organisations.

He said that the groups have constituted themselves into cults and business enterprises that have nothing to contribute to the government.

“These religious organisations, the Arewa, Afenifere, including Jamatul Nasril Islam (JNI) and CAN, should be banned because they are not religious organisations, they are not culture organisations, they are political associations under the guise of religious organisations,” he said.

The CBN governor noted that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides that the Federal Government must promote associations that cut across ethnic groups and the religious divide, adding, “But what we have are religious organisations that invite government officials to speak and the organisations honour them. They are just glorified institutions.”

It doesn't matter if he has a point. In a civilized society, it's not his place to speak on these things because the people that disagree with him will make it harder for him to do his job and the citizens that disagree with him won't allow him to do his job

you can't become a CBN director, constantly write about sharia and islamic law and wonder when southerners didn't trust you when you wanted to introduce islamic banking (which btw was introduced by Soludo, but failed with Sanusi because Sanusi's political slant made it scary for suspicious non muslims)

History will always note that in the midst of all the madness we call nigeria, that certain principled individuals like Sanusi existed for the sole purpose of relentless speaking the truth to the public.

How has CAN benefited the country besides being a pressure group and political platform for claiming the private jet blessing?

All seeking brown envelopes.

I am wondering how Sanusi is 'hitting' the polity.Did he use a heavy stick to 'hit' it on the head?I'm lost here.
kingingkinging: THE MAN IS IS ONLY BRILLIANT ACADEMICALLY BUT NEITHER INTELLIGENT NOR WISE.

AS A MALLAM(TEACHER OF QURAN OR A DEVOUT MUSLIM) HE BELONGS TO ONE POLAR END OF THE RELIGION AND ANYTHING HE SAYS WOULD BE SEEN IN THAT LIGHT. HE SHOULD LEARN HOW TO TALK REASONABLY.

EVEN IF HE HAS A GOOD POINT, PEOPLE WILL NEVER TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY BECAUSE OF HIS ETHNO-RELIGIOUS AFFLIATION.
HAUSA CALLING FOR A BAN OF AFENIFERE;
MUSLIM CALLING FOR A BAN OF CAN;
MUSLIM TALKING ABOUT JAIZ BANK OR ISLAMIC BANKING;

HE IS JUST HITTING THE POLITY.

As a Nigerian, he's free to air his views but what matters is where, when and how he does it. Maybe if he said it only to his wife and children, the media wouldn't have heard it. Just thinking of what would happen if Ben Bernanke (US), Mario Draghi (ECB), or Sir King (England) said similar things.

I blame this Sanusi's utterances on his Health Care Provder who removed "Mental Health Checkup" from the services offered to this Mallam.

Something must be wrong with Sanusi's brain.

private jet and terrorism , which is better? Sanusi left out a major religious body that supports terrorism because he is scared that they will kill him while he focuses on other groups that don't support violence. He is such a coward.

God add to your blessings SLS for speaking the truth. CAN especially under Oritsejafor is only creating enmity between xtians and muslims. JNI is just a jamboree for traditional rulers. Neither organisation serves the interest of the ordinary xtian or muslim. Even if they are not banned, they should be sidelined- this way, the politicians heading them, but masquerading as religious leaders, will find their fortune elsewhere.

elampiro: Sanusi is on point. He said these organizations are now more political than religious and honour politicians. I don't think they are guiding the leaders of these country aright, else things will be better. What he has said will bring the leaders of these bodies to their senses.

I beg to disagree with u Sir, SLS is not on point. Reason: banning these organisations is not a sure way of keeping them under. Besides we are talking of religious and political organisations. Religion has always been there even before SLS' fore-fathers knew how to cover up their unclothedness. Lets not forget that, "Man also is a political animal". Man has every right of association and will not take lightly to such ban that will affect his life, and this is sure to breed anarchy. Instead, these bodies should be regulated in such a way that they don't interfere with the system, if that's what SLS means. That's what happens in civilized countries of the world. Why not here? If govt fails to regulate the important organisations amongst them and they go AWOL, who is to blame?
But can one really blame SLS for this outburst? This is how the Emirs laud their rulership over their people. grin grin grin

dreZilla: My favourite Aboki/Mallam has being misunderstood again. All of us know that there is some element of truth in what he is saying. Only that I am not sure if he should be making such statement as CBN gov.

What he said is the truth - the whole truth. But the religious and ethnic jobbers wont agree.

Those religious/ethnic bodies brought us to this point by supporting evil/lies and allowing themselves to be used for personal ambitions of politicians.

I am very much sure, very soon, all these religious noise will be put to the background where it belongs in our national life.

Ngwakwe: Write to the President to also ban and dissolve any State you don't like.

He should even execute Chinua Achebe for writing "There was a Country" because the book is causing national divide.

Has this blabby monkey responded to Bamidele Aturu's FOI-backed request to supply full information about his emoluments as CBN governor? That is where we need his 'opinion'. It's ridiculous how he prefers to vent opinions where his opinions are not needed.

Chinua Achebe has everything to do with the topic. Cant u see; "He should even execute Chinua Achebe for writing "There was a Country" because the book is causing national divide." his book is causing National Divide. But the execute part of it, i don't subscribe to it.
