Reports made available to Saturday Tribune by security agencies show that the Spiritual Leader of the Boko Haram sect, ABUBAKAR SHEKAU is in Gao, northern Mali. According to the same reports, he was wounded early 2013 during a gun battle with the soldiers of the Joint Task Force but he managed to escape to Mali where he has been receiving treatment from the Tuareg rebels.

Military intelligence sources say that Shekau escaped to Mali via porous routes in the border, after he was shot at a checkpoint disguising as a Fulani nomad back from a trip with two other members in vehicle who also escaped with gunshot wounds. Six Avtomat Kalashnikov-1947 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.

Many of the weapons recovered, especially the explosives were said to have made their way into the country from Libya during the rebellion against Muammar Gaddafi.
It was also claimed that from their base in Mali, Boko Haram has been able to attack Nigeria and has justified the deployment of 1,200 troops, C-130 transport aircraft, two Alpha fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force which are already stationed in Niamey, Niger Republic from which their offensive against the Malian Tuaregs will be launched.

Part of the mission of the Nigerian troops is also to capture Shekau and bring him to account in Nigeria. Shekau was the second-in-command to Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of the sect killed by Nigerian government forces.

By the way, Gao is a city located on the River Niger and is fully under the control of the Ansar Dine and National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) rebels who captured it from the Malian Army. With a population of about 90,000, Gao is to the southeast of Timbuktu and contains the tomb of Mohammed Askia the Great.

NB: Picture shows him with a chewing stick. The stick itself is a kind of twig called the miswak, chewing the stick is a tradition practised by many Muslims around the globe. Reputed for having good medicinal effects on oral health, chewing the miswak (or what we Yorubas call pako) was recommended by the World Health Organization in 1986. That's just by the way for the supercurious...lol

Frankly speaking I believe this is a lie told to justify to justify the deployment of Nigerian troops to Mali. Even if there was such a shoot out there is nothing to give them certainty as to who were involved and where they were moved to.
