The Federal Government has approved the sum of N1.496 billion for the building of a mausoleum in honour of the country’s first President, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

The mausoleum which will be located in Onitsha, Anambra State and is expected to be completed in 13 months.

The decision was reached Wednesday at the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The minister of information represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ms. Ama Pepple and the Minister of Mines and Steel, Mohammed Sada, said that the proposal for the mausoleum has been in the pipeline since 2006.

They concurred that the President promised to re-visit the matter during his visit to Anambra State.

According to Abati, “the President during his visit to Anambra State had given his word that the issue will be revisited and that was done today because the country owes it to posterity and the memory of the great Zik to ensure that the mausoleum is built and there is concrete assurance by the ministry of Lands and Housing that this time around, the Mausoleum will be completed.

Pepple explained the award of the contract saying the “contract was originally under the Presidency but it was stalled and had to be cancelled three times. But in 2010 it was transferred to the Ministry of Lands and Housing Development when it became a full-fledged ministry.”

Pepple, who said the mausoleum which was a national project that had to be completed before the country’s centenary celebration in 2014, also said the funds for the project had been split into the 2012 and 2013 budget.

“In this year’s budget, we have N530million in the 2012 budget with which we are going to start off the project with and we have also put N1billion in the budget for next year and if that is given to us we should be able to complete it within the time stipulated.

“So we are very hopeful that we will get the needed funds and the ministry is quiet ready to ensure that we get value for money for the job that we are giving out,” she said.

On the approved roadmap of the mining sector, Sade said the document was to awaken “ourselves to the various governmental policies to work on and targets to achieve.”

He said government had also given incentives to encourage investors in the sector, stating that all mining equipments brought into the country will be duty free.

when i saw mausoleum, i thought it is a road that will cover over 1000km until i checked the meaning.
Another way of wasting resources that are to be used for useful things.

jaymichael: misplaced priorities, waste of valuable resources.
How can it be wasteful? Is it not better than keeping it in a Swiss private bank account?
Finally, they are taking care of their leader's memory.

both wastefulness and keeping in Swiss account are all bad anyway.
Must we always build our choice on two bad options?
There are many correct projects to be done with the national resources that will benefit the large percentage of the populace if not all.
A devil is not better than satan cos both have no good things to offer.

Rt Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe is the first President of this country. He deserves such honor from Nigeria. Besides it going to be a tourist center for both Nigerian and International visitors, which will in turn churn out millions of dollars per annun for the country. Great Zik was the greatest Pan-Africanist.

Since Nigeria is not known for any sort of financial prudence, then some waste must be better than other wastes grin.
At least all the bricklayers, carpenters, material suppliers, welders will all benefit one way or the other.
Better than swiss bank account. You get my drift?
Would you rather want a con man to take your cash or your happy spending wife to blow it on a new wardrobe? Best of the two evils.

If this is your reason of wasting 1.5billion naira on a mausoleum, then am afraid government is not ready to fight corruption.

i understand man! Nigeria is not known for any good thing except for the opposite. But does that now mean we should continue to encourage one evil just that it is fair and better than the other not taking into consideration that an evil is an evil.
Let us not use a wrong to correct a wrong cos two wrongs dont make a right!
Remember the fallacy of false dichotomy!

I am afraid, Nigeria was created and programmed not to work.
Things will continue this way until everybody answer their ancestor's name, then go home and fix, everyone his problem, with no one to blame anymore.
That why I am up for any waste now that common people some how benefit from, irrespective of how small the benefits are.

LOL @Emboldened......... Thought the money was wasteful too, and still not convinced otherwise. Except there is a plan to recoup it through some form of Tourism like the Lincoln Memorial et al

no human society is created to succeed due to many individual differences, even twins seldom get a disagreement but understanding is the solution.
Each individual answering his father's name is not even the 'final' solution. Just like the issue of two brothers that decided to fight their uncle cos he selfishly claimed their father's land. When the land was retrieved, the twins then had to face a bigger task of how the land would be shared.
If the nation is broken along its tribal planes, does that mean each tribe won't have to face it's internal differences? E.g somalia which is still considered to have an homogeneous society
