Mothers To Be - Preeclampsia And Eclampsia Can Be A Killer by MyneWhite1(f): 7:15am On Feb 05, 2013
Hmmm..sometimes, pregnancy is just so scary, and when a woman goes through and has a healthy baby, it is really a thing of joy and thanks to God. I watched a show recently where the woman died after labor and I had to find out more about what killed her.

Preeclampsia, or toxemia, is not just for the 1920s and even today, pregnant women still die from it. Eclampsia is a series of convulsions that occur in pregnant women that are not related to any preexisting epilepsy or other brain disorders. And to think this still claims accounts for a good percentage of maternal deaths, hmmm. Click on the link below for symptoms to watch out for.

For those who are pregnant, please pay attention to your doctor or midwife and don't complain if they want to see you and take your blood pressure all the time. And do make sure to attend those antenatal and prenatal classes. Your child's and your life may depend on it.

PRE-ECLAMPSIA can kill! ECLAMPSIA is a KILLER (DEATH)!
The conditions r on the increase among working class mothers in Nigeria presently. They usually have stress origin, so every husband must learn to monitor their pregnant wives' health & offer every assistance necessary including doing all domestic chores.
When u hear "protein in the urine" authorize immediate evacuation, IMO.

Very good topic OP perhapes its best in the health section but non the less this killer disease needs some more awearness. I have seen women die of this and their death could and should have been prevented. Its sad really I had Pre eclamsia my last pregnancy and it was very scary but i was in Canada where every resource is available for me and my then unborn child. Working on the forfront in Nigeria its really sad when some women go for maternal care from teh midwives and most of them dont even know what pre eclamsia is, simple step like checking bp they dont even do. I can only pray maternal and infant health programs can improve in the coutry.

I suffered from Preclampsia when I was pregnant with my son.

I had been having severe headaches for weeks but ignored it, then I had my regular midwife check and after she examined me, she sent me straight to the hospital. My baby was delivered by CS the same day, I remember the Doctors and Midwives telling me that if I had not come in that day, the story could have been different lipsrsealed

Pregnant ladies, please if you have any pains or experience anything different from the normal, just go straight to the hospital. We can never ever be too careful.

I remember we stayed in hospital for close to 10 days after the birth, baby was fine but my BP refused to go down.

Still thanking God for sparing my life

10 days in the hospital after birth?? I stay only 4 days and left on d 5th day even though my bp refused to come down too, i wasnt sick and i didnt even have headache during my time.. All i noticed was tht my legs were swelling up and it got my mum concerned, i carried d pregnancy to term but i wasnt allowed to deliver on my own, i gave birth tru CS too. God alone makes all tins possible, many pple have gone because of this pre eclampsia tin, i think d best way to reduce maternal death is to educate the world on this killer sickness

The 10 days really surprised everyone but they won't let me go with a high BP. They moved me to a side room and took the baby away most times so I could get enough rest.
I live in the UK though, may be different where you live.

Certainly is different in developed countries where women have a much more favorable outcome. Medical treatment is more advanced and health care practitioners are more prone to look into pre e, whereas i found in Nigeria most midwife's are not really aware of it or the serious implications associated with it.

u re right.. During my time the hospital i registered wit never took intrest in the high bp i was having. I kept complaining about my swollen legs but they kept telling me to always raise the legs up. My mum is a nurse and was always check me and she was getting very worried and took me to the hospital were she worked and tht is were i was told i had protein +++. The following day my mum followed me to antenatal and tht was the day they saw i had pre eclampsia. The Lord alone was my strength because who knws wat might have happened if my mum wasnt a nurse.

There is a reason for ante natal care. Many women presnt late to hospitals and that is why a pre eclampsia can become severe or lead to eclampsia.

The solution is to give awareness on how important ante natal care is. A pregnant woman shouldnt be kept at home taking paracetamol for her headache. She should be taken to a hospital.

Many of those so called hospitals should not be existing in the first place. Eclampsia is one of the very serious conditions in pregnancy. How they could not detect that is amazing

Managing eclampsia does not require the 'advanced technology'. In a severe case, terminating the pregnancy is d last resort.

A pre eclampsia can be well managed in most health institutions around the world with simple procedures of continual monitoring and hypotensive medications

It is not as bad as you make it seem. When people go for antenatal care from the start of their pregnancy, it would be detected and managed effectively.
