wesley80:

The airports in Asaba and Owerri can be upgraded if need be, those two cities have more pressing needs than international airports.

Nna need don "be". cheesy
Enwego need siiiiiiiiiiiiince! Yet, we are being played. When would we be able to take off from SE and land in New York?
I personally think that the governors of these "airport states" are either selling us or are being willing tools to deny us that international air access.
What are they waiting for?
Governor of Akwa Ibom is building an international airport in Uyo that I'm sure does not command the commercial potentials of an Aba or Onitsha.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we should reject these talks that SE does not need an international airport urgently; WE DO.
If fact we needed it yesterday!.

These cities are still growing...They don't need to merge with other cities to achieve that. What they need to do is to develop beyond their limits into smaller towns and villages like PH has done but in a more structured way.

You are on point. Onitsha needs an International airport. I read somewhere that Orient Petroleum in conjunction with Anambra state govt is about start an Int'l cargo airport around Otuocha area- an outskirt of Onitsha.
Re: 90% Of Cash Transactions In Only 5 Cities-CBN by EASTSIDAZ: 11:30pm On Feb 07, 2013
Below is the interview granted by the GMD of Orient Petroleum

"[b]THERE'S TALK ABOUT AN AIRPORT PROJECT THERE. CAN YOU ELUCIDATE ON THAT?

Yes, there will be an airport. I spoke about Orient Petroleum Resources PLC being a holding company. The holding company has four subsidiaries. One subsidiary is the refining of petro-chemical component which is going to operate the refinery; the second is the one that is about producing oil and gas; that is called the exploration and production subsidiary. Then we have a subsidiary which is gas and power which is supplying gas to Nkalagu cement, to breweries at 9th Mile, and possibly to this SABmiller Brewery in Onitsha. The final one is the infrastructure and services which will look after the airport and other infrastructure like housing and so on which will support the operations of the other three subsidiaries.

So the vision was that Orient will be a vertically integrated company. It derives its own raw materials, sells its products; provides its services. The airport was supposed to provide an outlet for aviation kerosene which is one of the products of the refinery. So planes will land there and load with aviation kerosene. That's the aviation fuel (ATK). So there will be a pipeline that takes aviation kero there; the aircraft will load and we can be selling aviation kero to Kano International Airport, to Lagos, even to Ghana and other places right from that point. So the airport itself is to provide an outlet for aviation kero and also it will provide a quick source of spares. Let's say you need something in the refinery, you fly it in. So we do have licence from the federal government to set up an international cargo airport to fly in materials there. This airport is located in about 1,200 hectares of land in Ifite Umuleri. It's already surveyed and work will start very soon now that we have income from the oil production.

SO HOW SOON DO YOU RECKON THE AIRPORT WILL BE READY?

The airport will be constructed in phases just like the refinery. The first phase will be the runway and the cargo shed. Those ones could be done in 18 months and then the next phase will be the second runway so that it will be like Abuja which is getting the second runway. Lagos already has two runways. So we're looking far ahead. These runways are of international standard; the ICAO standard (International Civil Aviation Authority).

They're long enough to take a Boeing 747 cargo. The biggest jumbo jet can land in the airport; that's why it's so long; 1,300 hectares and the runway is about 4 kilometres. It's longer than Enugu and Asaba airports. It's again futuristic to make sure that in 20 years to come it will still be serving us.

SO IT WILL BE STRICTLY A CARGO AIRPORT AND NOT FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES?

Not quite. The licence is for international cargo and domestic passengers. So you can have passengers who are inside Nigeria. It's not international passenger; it can't take off from there and fly to London; no, but I can bring in materials from outside the country and fly materials out of the country; that's cargo, but the airport itself can operate as a domestic airport. It will have a runway and a terminal building. The one in Enugu is international passenger airport but this one is international cargo.

What i have in mind is Asaba and Onitsha with the surrounding towns of Obosi, Mkpor, Ogidi,Umuoji, Oba etc becoming a purpose built business cornubation.
With an international airport in Asaba and a river port in Onitsha all linked by rail.

Many of these cities are very tiny. Onitsha needs to Join Asaba and develop all the way to Agbo to achieve a standard city size like Lagos. Aba needs to join with Owerri and Port-Harcourt or Umuahia to achieve same.

Habaa! how big is Lagos? don't you know that Lagos state is the smallest state in Nigeria

olboy, what that onitsha, nkpor obosi axis needs is a fashola style drainages. and for some paints to touch some of those houses. the areas are already built up into decent residential units. asaba also needs to start their own 3-4 storeys to match those of onitsha. i believe it will be the catalist to drive more anambra igbos across the river and might even continue the trend all the way to agbor. moreso, that bridge needs to be built into a four lane expressway. just how much could it cost? kpatakpata, they toll it for funds. i cant wait to hit the east this year God willing. e don too tay, make e no be like them "gwoo" the thing. wink

Rail and functional international airport is highly needed.

Federal govt. should invest ( or encouraged to invest) in Aba and Onitsha for both to start running fast / well, and Nigerians with other African countries would benefit greatly from it.

you are wrong. it is the way they did the budget that is why..
Lagos. That is: Abuja, Kano, Aba, Port Harcourt and Onitsha.

this is the reason. you have black on black racism in nigeria.. black people who discriminate. the member of the senate and reps are too. i am not scared to speak

this is how they collect revenue. it is 3 economy of west, north and east

the west has the least per capital head.. most people in the west live in 50 cent a day.

most people do not see the politician as representative because they are a result of election rigging.

under international law, western nigeria should not pay any taxes to abuja. it is illegal for a sovereign state to pay to another. it account for the reason why poverty is high.

they have left the people no alternative but to fight them and this is what their history says
