whoever wrote this article got it slightly wrong. teams go through cycles but the fact that a team won a trophy does not mean it is in ascendancy. The key element here is FORM. This team found its form at the right time! I suspect if the team had met any other team apart from ivory coast in the quater final it wouldn't have won the cup. The win against CIV gave the team the needed self-belief and that energised the team into believing they could win the cup. If we are to follow your analysis, shall we say the Zambia team that won the last edition but could not make it past the group stage has suddenly found itself in decline? The Eagles still have a long way to go in order to be a finished product sad sad sad sad

I think if the SE keep up this tempo, they can do well in the Confederation cup and the world cup because these events are about one year away and less. We just have to keeps our boys together in training so that they won't lose that unity of purpose. The coach also has to be left to continue. If he resigns then he should be begged to come back and his salary should be doubled.

Btw, i can't wait to see the new FIFA rankings.

Modest target there, and is achievable if all hands are on deck.

HARDDON: Why dis mediocre dream? Why don't we just aim ƒoя d cup? d If you can iмagiпԑ it, you can achieve it . Living prove.

Dose who have won it countless Times aint Demigods. We can do it if we put out minds to it. Remember beating Brazil, that was football world powér, in Olympic 96? Take ♏ԑ to bethel again!

You can imagine alot of things but went get nada if you do not prepare right - but you are right. I think Nigeria should not go about saying this is our target. Train and play like you are better than the best. The 1994 team believe that and were ascending until that tourny in South Africa.

Words are very powerful and if they opt for second place they will perhaps only achieve 2nd round.

Getting in the semi final is not good enough for any good African team anymore - thats very mediocre

What i want to see is our footballers doing well at club level, ridding themselves of the Babayaro demons of posing and page 3 girls etc etc

Its time for dignity and quite destruction

The guy's analysis is correct... and yes of course the Zambian team is not only declining but nose-diving. The only difference is that they declined incredibly faster than others mentioned in his comment and not that I am wishing them bad but from all indications, their team will diminish further. That team needs some replenishment with few new good players to be up again but they don't have any for now. That means, they will still play their future games with this same guys. The problem is that the barely average Zambian players do not have that inspiration from the spirit of the dead anymore. So now they need real skills to win a tournament, luck or no luck... Just like we have done. All our wins in this tournament had nothing to do with luck, they were all convincing victory.

When did their ascension start that they're already "declining" within 1 year? they were never up!

When did dreaming big become delusional. The only delusion here is ur myopic thinking.

Nigeria can make it to the semis, the team has grown, their style of play has also blended and thats what makes a good team. United with one purpose they wld lift the world cup.

Up Eagles.

tbaba1234: We have to qualify first!

This is still a young team. The 94 and 96 teams are ahead in terms of quality but this team cold achieve more because most of the players are not yet at their prime.

It took us 5 years to build a team that was number 5 in the world. This team is barely a year old... We will still have to be patient with them.
Keshi says the team is less than 5 weeks old

Jarus: World Cup Semi Final As Next Target - Before The Gas Runs Out

It is common knowledge that football form, especially for national teams, is in cycle.

A time to be at the peak, a time to begin to descend and a time to be at lowest ebb and a time to recover. And the cycle continues.

From 1990 to 1994, Nigeria's Super Eagles gradually moved up the form ladder, reached peak between 1994 - 1996, began to decline from 1998 and banked on pedigree to stil remain force to reckon with between 1998 - 2004, with the retirement of key players between after 2004, the team struggled between 2004 to 2012. Now back on its feet.

Ghana, Egypt, Senegal, Cameroun also went through the cycle at different times.

At Nigeria's peak between 1994 - 1996, Nigeria won AFCON 94 and Olympic 96.
At Senegal's peak between 2001 - 2002, they got to AFCON 2002 final and quarterfinals at world cup
At Ghana's peak between 2006 - 2010, they got to AFCON 2010 final and world cup quarterfinal, almost thru to semis

This is Nigeria's peak again, since the decline after 1994-96, we have AFCON already, can we stun at world cup by getting to or close to semi final like Senegal/Ghana, before the decline sets in again?

The scenario painted here is true of product life cycle. A football team well managed need not go through the same cycle. All any country needs is to always keep a pool of talents to be trained and brought in to replace tired legs. It is only when a country or a football team allows itself to be exhausted with no plan for replacements that they come down the high pinacle of success. The team we have now can still be a team A, while a Team B and even Team C is put in place and gradually groomed to take over with the passage of time. Have you ever wondered why Brazil has never missed attending the world cup? In Nigeria we will never do the right things because there is money to be made from failure. If Keshi had failed, they would have contracted foreign coaches and started sharing pounds and dollars with that one. I have since given up on this silly contraption call NFF and their parents Nigeria. I hail the super Eagles though for silencing critics.

pelezico: We have a good team however we need to blood more talent so that we have potentially two good players for every position

We should simply continue were we left off - Nigeria will likely become a better commodity again and teams will want to play us.

For now we should simply cool and then reflect on what we could have done better.

We have to retain that West African (or specifically that Nigeria) flare in our game and do not try to mimic Spain. If we do that will be our downfall. We can beat Spain since i believe our players are stronger and just as skilful however to beat the South Americans and best of Europe our game must be more African.

True talk.I also think we need to invite some new players lik sydney sam of bayern leverkusen.

shadrach77: italy is the current world cup holder wink wink wink

Wrong. Spain is the current cup holder and so they qualify because of that. Spain is also the UEFA champion and so being that they qualify on both premises (being World Cup winners as well), the runner-up (Italy) assumes Europe's representative. In simple terms, Spain cannot qualify as European champions since they are already world champions.
