Death Penalty Approved For Terrorists In Nigeria by Adanyebe(m): 12:57pm On Feb 21, 2013
The Nigerian Senate yesterday unanimously prescribed death penalty for any person engaged in acts of terrorism in the country.

Also, persons or corporate bodies who knowingly in or outside Nigeria directly or indirectly willingly assists, facilitates, organises or directs the activities of persons or organisations engaged in "act of terrorism" is liable on conviction to maximum of life imprisonment.

The penalties were contained in a report of the Conference Committee on a Bill for an Act to amend the Terrorism (prevention) Act, 2011 and for other related matter, considered and adopted by the Senate at Wednesday's plenary.

LEADERSHIP recalls that the Terrorism (prevention) Act 2011 (amendment) Bill, 2012 was passed by the Senate on October 17, 2012 and in the House of Representatives on October 11, 2012.

However, some differences were noticed in the two versions of the Bill, as passed by the two chambers. Consequently, a Conference Committee was constituted comprising both chambers on October, 2012 to reconcile the areas of differences, which appeared in essentially six clauses of the Bill.

New amendments to Section 17 of the Terrorism Act, gave a clear distinction between "an act of terrorism" and "an act of conspiracy". For the latter, an imprisonment for a term of not less than 20 years is prescribed.

A new provision (section 1A) dealing with national co-ordinating bodies in counter terrorism designates specific institutions and vest specific powers and functions. Read More

The 1st mistake was making laws without making punishments for breaking them.
however, i hope this is not all about shutting the mouth of Mr. Henry Oka in southafrica, as in the case of Mustapha, I really hope this is about fighting terrorism in nigeria.

They would have first defined Terrorism beyond every reasonable doubt to avoid loopholes that are subject to only legal interpretations.

I propose they add Piracy and Illegal Oil bunkering in addition to Kidnapping as offences that should carry the death sentence. Piracy because in most cases they kill those they take as hostages and illegal oil bunkering, because they have no regard for their own lives because the pipelines they destroy could therefore go up in flames thereby endangering their lives, the lives of those habitating around the pipelines and they also destroy the ecosystem.

for me this is not an achievement. Enact death penalty for any form of corruption and we shall take you serious. Corruption gave birth to terrorism in Nigeria. For now, dont insult our intelligence. We know the root cause.

still waiting for death penalty for corrupt leaders because they are the root of the evils in this country. in my opinion, the effect of corruption has led to more deaths than those caused by these other terrorists. dilapidated roads are death traps, poorly equipped hospitals are death nests, non availability of safe drinking water and millions who cannot afford clean water having to drink "poison" daily, fall sick and go to the same poorly equipped hospitals and on and on...are products of corruption. the corrupt politicians cause DEATH BY CORRUPTION and should be punished by death also.
