Amnesty International Accuses Lagos Of Forceful Evictions With Demolition Of 300 by Nobody: 7:14am On Feb 25, 2013
Human Rights organisation, Amnesty International, has accused the Lagos State government of gross violation of human rights with the on going demolition of houses and forced eviction of residents of Oke Ilu-Eri area, Ijora Badia, in the state.

A statement by the London based group appealed to the state government to “immediately stop” such evictions which it claimed, commenced on Saturday 23 February 2013, at approximately 9am, when bulldozers entered the community of Oke Ilu-Eri and began demolishing houses.

“According to the Nigerian NGO, Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC), which has been working with leaders of the community since Wednesday to try to prevent the demolition, at least 300 houses have been demolished so far with hundreds of people displaced” the statement read.

“SERAC said about 200 heavily armed police officers supervised the demolition and several residents who tried to resist the demolition were beaten up by the police.”

Amnesty further alleged that “no adequate notice was given to the residents of the community before the demolition commenced” but it noted that “on Wednesday 20 February a notice of eviction was given to the Baale (the traditional district head) of the community – just three days before the demolition started.”

Noting the demolitions are still on going, Amnesty International lamented that “no compensation has been paid to residents; the evicted people have not been offered alternative housing and many people have been displaced.”

“The demolished houses included both wooden and concrete structures. Some of the displaced residents owned their homes, while many were poor tenants.”

“The eviction of people from their homes without the appropriate legal and procedural safeguards, including prior and adequate consultation, adequate notice and the provision of adequate alternative housing constitute a forced eviction and is a gross violation of human rights including the right to adequate housing” said Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Africa, Lucy Freeman.

The body therefore called on the Lagos State government to “stop the on-going demolition; embark on a genuine consultation with the affected community; immediately provide adequate alternative housing to all those who have been forcibly evicted; and provide emergency relief including access to food, shelter, water, sanitation and healthcare services to the affected people.”

The state government is reported to be planning to construct its 1,008 housing estates in Ijora-Badia under its Lagos Homes Housing Scheme.

Certainly. The fact that an eviction notice was given to the Baale just 3 days before the eviction, was absolutely farcical.

So due process and international conventions stipulate that you can just go and build your house anywhere you like in contravention of the law?

Amnesty International should tell us how many people in London can just go and erect a shack wherever they see fit.

Those people evicted should return to their villages if they have nowhere to live.

The question is still this? If Lagos can boast of N30 billion revenues every month and the so-called 'E ko oni baje' is still like that.....I wonder what's in it for the inhabitants! I have spent a greater part of my life in Lagos (over 25 years) yet each timed I breezed in it is still the same thing, excessive traffic jams in virtually every nooks and crannies, extortion, over-concentration of developments of the island to the detriment of mainland, high transport fares which still affect pockets of salary-earners etc. Unfortunately, people just enjoy being exploited just for the fun of it undecided All I hear is 'mega-city, mega-city as if that will put money into the pockets of the common man on the streets! E ko tin baje ooo, it's a question of time' cool

The rationale for the over-concentration of developments on the Island is that the residents there are the highest-earning Lagosians, who pay substantial tax.

The 'Mega City' initiative will encompass both the mainland and island areas.

The aim of a mega city in any country is to boost economic developments, if the short falls of this mega city project of a thing is not well considered it may back fire on the long run especially on the 'less privileged' it will definitely breed a big wide gulf between the rich and the poor! Who and who are benefiting from this project I think that is one thing we need to consider!

You are right on the money! The most important thing in any mega city are the standard/cost of living of all residents.

Something has to be done to stop the influx of squatters in the State. They move in, build shanties and expand them. Relocating the displaced will only encourage more of them to come. Other states are now doing big things, why don't they move there instead??

I think the Igbos on this forum are the low lifes and up to no goods of the Igbo tribe.

It's such a shame that because of you people's imagined grip of Lagos, you think using propaganda to divide the Yorubas will work.

You have tried to pitch Egun, Ilaje, Itsekiri and Awori against other Yorubas but you all forget one thing, The last time Azikiwe did that, he lost his position as president and lost 2million of his tribes men. Again, all because of Azikiwe's imagined grip or on Lagos. Azikiwe wanted Lagos in control of his tribemen but it failed.

Today again, same scenario is playing out but this time it is been championed by educated and unsophisticated illiterates who know how to read and write but don't know how to think.

Lagos is moving on. Lagos is a Yoruba land and Yorubas never gave it up in any convention, meeting or arrangement with any organization, so why all the grief?

The funniest thing is that these propaganda animals only visited Lagos a couple of times and are fanning flames of discord from Enugu or any of their villages. Lagosians have moved on beyond being scared of the one another because of TRIBE. Lagosians know Lagos is a Yoruba land and they also know Lagos is part of Nigeria so they have equal rights as Nigerians. But the illiterates think because Lagos is a Yoruba land and Yorubas make the rules, all rules will be to favour Yorubas at the expense of others.

You are not ashamed that all South Westerners claim Lagos State the former capital of Nigeria as their state of origin. What a shame.

Assuming all Almajiris start chasing the Yorubas to go back to their village and leave FCT Abuja their state for them.

How sensible does it sound to your ears?

Bunch of Hypocrites
