U.S Threatens Sanctions Against Nigeria Over Pardon For Ex-convict Alamieyeseigh by fkaz(m): 6:27am On Mar 16, 2013
The controversial pardon granted some ex-convicts by President Goodluck Jonathan has sparked a diplomatic standoff between Nigeria and the United States,  with the Americans threatening to punish Nigeria over Mr. Jonathan’s action.
Nigeria has in turn accused the United States of “meddlesomeness”.
The U.S. had through its official twitter handle @USEmbassyAbuja on Friday condemned Mr. Jonathan’s action, saying, “the #USG (United States Government) is deeply disappointed over the recent pardons of corrupt officials by GON (Government of Nigeria).”
It added, “We see this as a setback in the fight against corruption.”
A State Department official has now said the American government is not taking the matter lightly and might apply sanction as appropriate.
Speaking at the U.S. Department of State’s daily press briefing in Washington D.C. late Friday, Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the development in Nigeria might jeorpardize the governance projects America is executing in Nigeria.
The U.S. is the world’s top donor. In 2012, it spent about $226 million on health and governance programmes in Nigeria. And about $600million has been requested for 2013, according to U.S. government data.
In response to a question on whether aid to Nigeria might be cut, Ms Nuland said, “We see this as a setback for the fight against corruption, and also for our ability to play the strong role we’ve played in supporting rule of law and legal institution-building in Nigeria, which is very important for the future of the country obviously.”
She added, “We have made clear to the Nigerians that this puts a question mark on the kinds of work that we’ve been trying to do with them.
“We haven’t yet taken the kinds of steps that you’re suggesting Matt (the reporter who asked the question), but we’re continuing to look at what’s appropriate.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s foreign ministry has summoned a top U.S. diplomat to explain why its embassy posted critical comments on Twitter over a presidential pardon given to the Nigerians convicted on corruption charges, the Associated Press reports.
Quoting a statement issued on Friday night, the report said Nigerian officials filed an urgent request to speak to the U.S. deputy chief of mission over what it described as “meddlesomeness.”
President Jonathan and the National Council of State had granted ex- Bayelsa Governor, Mr. Alamieyeseigha and ex-boss of the defunct Bank of the North, Shettima Bulama pardon in a move condemned by civil society and other interest groups.
Both men had been convicted for corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Mr. Alamieyeseigha, who chose Mr. Jonathan as his running mate for the Bayelsa Governorship election in 1999, pleaded guilty to financial misappropriation and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Some members of the Council of States had told PREMIUM TIMES that it was clear from the president’s mien and actions at the meeting that the pardon was targeted at Mr. Alamieyeseigha with the others only used as smokescreen.
The ex-Bayelsa Governor’s name was the first on the list of the pardon beneficiaries read by the president to attendees at the meeting including three former Nigerian heads of state.
Mixed reactions
Nigerians have, however, reacted differently to the U.S. reaction. While some say the U.S. has by its actions showed that it would not support the seemingly pro-corruption action of the government, others accused the American government of meddling in Nigerian affairs especially when its former presidents also pardoned similar ex-convicts.
“Who condemned USA when they pardoned Oliver North and the then president over Iran contra,” a commentator by the name Ben Growp posted on PREMIUM TIMES website.
“Various American presidents have pardoned individuals, the most controversial being Marc Rich, whose wife Denise is a contributor to the Democratic Party. Clinton’s actions were done a few hours to leaving office in January of 2001,” another commentator by the username Lanre posted.
Others like Odusanya Seye commended the U.S. statement.
“As a patriotic citizen of Nigeria, I find this retarded move to pardon a convict shameful for a country whose inhabitant cry for justice,” he said.

First I felt insulted by the way d Americans interfered in the matter, but after reading the article I think they have the right to interfere since the government has sold part of our country to them. If they give $236m and $600m to Nigeria in aid, then they have to cry foul when criminals are pardoned.

First worry about YOUR Government.

IF you truly feel bad, do the right thing in 2015 and vote out these people.

The United States Government is right in their action and I am using this opportunity to appeal to the United state government to help out outsted goodluck jonathan regime by sponsoring genuine militants with arms same way it did in Libya so that jonathan's administration can be outsted for good and let genuine peace and glory come to Nigeria. No doubt, Jonathan's administration is inimical to the peace and progress of Nigeria and should be flushed out immediately

ma people it is a shame...our did we get here? we have chose to depend on the WEST for every damn thing..In 2012 alone, USA spent about $226 million on health and governance programmes in Nigeria..if we as a people come together despite the underground disruption and internal conflits sponsored by neo-colonist intrests..if we stand and do what we are suppose to do as a people, we have the materials and the brains but unfortunately not the leaders cos we have empowered the wrong sects...look at china and even india...our leaders feel inferior in their presence their western counterparts thus they get cowed and the masses have bcom slaves...the white man is a tactitian he will do business at any level u place urself...only one crude oil platform generates 7 billion US dollars a yr in the niger-delta....whr does all these funds go? what is it used for? money is the simplest thing to multiply especially when you already have it in bulk...nigeria is one of the easiest contry to develop but we have bad leadership...so everything is decaying...its really sad and the worst thing is the ignorant among us are more...check out our syllabus since 1960...first of all, it was contructed for us to fit into an agenda designed for us to follow and not much upgrade have been done..some so called profs use the same lesson note they have been using in 1975...but we expect growth cos God loves us so much...this same God worked for 6days straight without rest...but we wanna fold our hands and expect enjoyment....

Why would the nigerian government accuse the US of meddlesomeness just because they interfered in the pardon saga of the corrupt citizens. Guess it would have been fair if the government had returned the US donation to nigeria.
A father has the right to interfere into the life of his son because he donated financially and psychologically to the growth and developement to the son. Perhaps he will have nothing to say if no contribution is done. Just like nigeria couldn't make any statement when US gave the pardon to her own citizens because nigeria had no donation to their wellbeing.

You want them to throw the money at your doorsteps before you acknowledge it? International organisations such as UNICEF, WHO and others are being partly sponsored by the US and most of these organisations carry out major projects in Nigeria; the retroviral drug for aids patients, the drugs for tuberculosis patients and others are heavily subsidised by unicef and co.

@topic, the US has every right to meddle with some activities by the federal government as such activities will certainly sabotage some of the efforts they put into this country.

No wise business man will invest his money on an unfriendly environment, and every wise business man does feasibility studies to ascertain the business environment he/she is investing on.

He should not only be impeached but tried at the International Court of Justice alongside Okukpe for crimes against humanity. GEJ is responsible the genocide currently been perpetuated in the north by Bokoharam guys and yet he could find time to slap nigerians in the face by granting amnesty to an unrepentant criminal. America should invade nigeria with her intelligence agents with a view to outsted badluck jonathan's regime. Look at syria, they are today fighting president assad's reginme. Same thing happened in libya and tunisia. Why would nigeria be a different ball game? I am therefore calling for a revolution or neo-colonization cause the antecedents in this present and past democratic governments speaks volume of the fact that nigeria isn't ripe to be called an independent state. South-africa is where it is today owing to delay in witnessing independence. We got ours too early and its affecting us cause what we have in power today are animals in human form and that's why shouldn't be marvelled at the loopesided policies and decision taken. America and her allies should please come and help us. Nigerians in the diapora should also keep echoeing the truth that nigeria is a failed state.

Nigeria is a sovereign nation, and will take no unsolicited advice from any other nation.

Nigeria did not interfere, 'express her misgivings', or describe it as ''a setback in the fight against drugs'' after Bill Clinton pardoned his drug trafficking brother just before he stepped down from office. Meanwhile the lives of millions of people are destroyed by hard drugs every year.

At least Alams was arrested and jailed even if for a day. Who will arrest the likes of George W Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld - corrupt to the bone former rulers of the US - who, based on a pack of utter lies and fabrication, proceeded to invade and seize Iraq, killing 2 million innocent people in the process, and seizing their oil resources worth trillions of dollars?

I MEAN, WHAT CORRUPTION BY ANY NIGERIAN LEADER EVEN COMES CLOSE TO THAT?

Why are those gentlemen still walking free?

Why are they not standing trial at the ICC for crimes against humanity?

Yet these are the people ''expressing their misgivings'' over the pardon of some guy in Nigeria who stole a few million dollars?

One doesn't really blame the Americans for their rank hypocrisy. It is the local population here in Nigeria who - blind as bats - see their every word as God's own utterance, that should be pitied.

THIS SAME AMERICA whose CIA has OPENLY ADMITTED to toppling populist elected African leaders like Patrice Lumumba - replacing same with dictator and arch looter Mobutu Sese Seko in DRC, simply because the former refused to allow his nation to be a fiefdom for mineral hungry American firms. These are the same Americans giving 'advice' on corruption?

Of course it should be clear that whatever they are saying is merely for show. 'Forming saint' as we we would put it in Nigeria. Question is, why is anyone fooled?

I really miss the days of the Great leader Gen Sani Abacha. who asks the USA for Aid then ? who needs their input ? who even travels there for their blessings, validations and advice ? Maybe Obasanjo and Jonathan but i know Gen Abacha has no time for all that nonsense. he lead a nation that is to be respected, feared and dealt with with caution. he stands head to head with world leaders and made policies of Nigeria first, created stable west Africa through ECOMOG thereby keeping direct US/European Military interventions far away.... well, what do we have now ?

Who knows, maybe they are even the ones that killed him. Any leader who shows too much independence and/or love for his people, be it Chavez, Abacha, Sankara, Nkrumah, Murtala Muhammed etc, tends to die mysteriously early.

Its better they take aid from Nigeria. So Nigerians can really really feel the bite of a failed system. And then we can begin to deal with those in government. All this Aid never helps anyone! I support the US in those sanctions completely. It will bring Nigeria to its knees.
