According to the Governor who spoke during the inauguration ceremony in Asaba, the vision of his administration is to “develop a world class institution that can compete with similar institutions globally.”

“I therefore, urge you to focus greater attention on the institutional mandates of teaching, research, training and community service”. The Governor charged the governing council headed by a renowned banker, Mr. Tony Elumelu, to address the issue of educational programmes in the university in line with the core mandate with the goal of addressing their ability to meet national and international standards”.

While stating that his administration is committed to implementing policies and programmes that impact positively on human capital development, he reiterated, “the world today shows that education is the foundation on which our future is built.”

He also urged the Governing Council not only to ensure that funds allocated to the university is judiciously used but also to initiate programmes that will generate more revenue to the University outside government allocation, adding, “the University should be able to provide consultancy services to government, it’s agencies and the private sector to generate income, including assisting in tackling societal and environmental issues like the twin problems of flooding and erosion.”

Uduaghan observed that the Governing Council is made up of distinguished, well established and respected Deltans, stating that they should adopt best practices and comply with the statutory guidelines in the performance of their supervisory functions and make transparency, probity and due process their watchword.

“The Governing Council should encourage responsive and responsible unionism in the institution, while working to check the problem of cultism, drug and all anti-social activities by students,” the governor said, adding, “it is only under an atmosphere of discipline and peace that progress can be made.”

Responding on behalf of members of the Council which includes; Mr. Jite Okoloko, Prof. Dafe Otobo, Prof. (Mrs) Abhor Ighoroje, Dr Ikoyo Eweto, Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Omeni, Dr. Bright Okogu and Prof. Sam Pabor, the chairman of the Council, Mr. Elumelu assured that members of the council would strive to turn DELSU to a model of learning not only in Nigeria but in Africa.

Mr. Elumelu noted that their appointment was a call to duty and thanked Governor Uduaghan for considering them worthy of the appointment, emphasizing that they will carry out their duties diligently.
