The Christian Association of Nigeria has accused Governor Rauf Aregbesola of attempting to Islamise Osun State.

Chairman, Osun CAN, Superior Evangelist Abraham Aladeseye, and the Secretary, Rev Father Gbenga Ajayi, stated this at a news conference in Osogbo on Monday.

The organisation, which accused the Aregbesola administration of attempting to polarise religious groups in Osun, said the state government had been fixing state functions for Sunday mornings.

It added that the government might have changed the name of Osun State from 'State of the Living Spring' to 'State of the Virtuous,' because "Jesus Christ is referred to as the living spring."

CAN insisted that there had been increasing restiveness in the state occasioned by the insistence of some state government-backed Islamic fundamentalists, who had been calling for the wearing of hijab in all public schools - including Christian public schools.
Hijab is a type of cloth used by Muslim women to cover their faces.

Also, the Christian group faulted the declaration of a public holiday by the Aregbesola administration, stressing that"not even in Sokoto, the seat of the caliphate, is Hijra declared a public holiday."

The group said, "Bearing in mind the poor economic status of our state, one simply wonders why the governor chose to demolish the existing buildings in public schools, rather than renovate them as was being done by Ondo State Government.

"If this is not religious extremism, what else can it be, considering the fact that in the 40-year history of the National Youth Service Corps, hijab has not been incorporated into the NYSC uniform?"

But the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the state, Semiu Okanlawon, said the issues raised by CAN"are those that had been resolved long before now and in which all Christian leaders at the various meetings with the governor expressed clear understanding of the positions of the government."

Completely laughable! If Aregbesola could not "islamise" his immediate family, how on earth would he even "islamize" Osun?

Jesus, the living spring? Funny! Is Jesus not virtuous also? grin grin grin grin grin
State functions for Sunday Morning? What happens to Christians that attend their own churches on Saturday? Are they part of this Oritsejafor's PDP CAN?

Religion is not an issue in SW. Much more important is what you bring to the table in terms of competence and performance.

It is obvious dat those pastors were sponsored by somebody, please let the man do the governance in his own way and stop criticizing him,is it because Engr. is now a governor then he should forget his religion totally, thatz nt possible!

I don't know what all the fuss is about?
The state branch of CAN did not state if he holds state functions every sunday or its just an occasional thing, and if he stops the christians working with him from attending sunday services!

I know that Osun state is often referred to as "Ipinle Omoluabi, omoluabi means Virtuous. If CAN is displeased because he intends to change it from "land of the living spring" for Christ is also known as the living spring, wouldn't the muslims in the state also feel that they are trying to "Christianise" Osun?

Most of the accusations levelled against the governor by CAN except that of hijra are unwarranted and groundless. CAN should not attempt to bring confusion, schism and insurrection amongst a people who see themselves as one irrespective of their religion! Did CAN ever voice out against Oyinlola at the time he was plunging the state into debt and mismanaging the state resources? CAN should refrain from playing politics with religion!

Osun actually got d name living spring by virtue of d Osun goddess & river. This does nt refer to Jesus in any way.
I wonder y religious leaders always interfere in politics.
Any aggrieved persons shld speak with their reps @ d state house of assembly or go 2 d courts if @ all d gov has misused or abused his office.

Lol @ how bitter and desperate a party could be to an extent of manipulating religious leaders to broadcast lies from the pit of hell.
Same tactics these people have been using for the past two years which hasn't worked Damn, it's getting boring.

Of all S/W states osun has the list difference in Xtian-Muslim population. (When Lagos, Oyo and Kwara that are dominated by Muslims did nothing of such)

85% of the indegenes of the gov town(Ilesha) are Xtians His family members inclusive

How come the governor is promoting Islamic agenda?? even with his Christian Deputy grin

Plus the central Christian worship centre under-construction by this same governor undecided is also meant to promote islamic agenda in the state?

If these concerns were raised for your love towards we Christians in Osun, we appreciate that but please lies won't be accepted. It's good we have opposition parties to make a gov do better but as for lies against our dear gov, we're sincerely against it.

Eshe, A dupe... Ewa maa lo... cool

Lol. Can't get past the ridiculously grandiose appellation of the Osun State CAN Chairman. "Superior Evangelist" indeed. Superior to who or what exactly?
