TECHNICAL PORTING PROCEDURE

Forget the technical label, it’s pretty simple what goes on behind the curtains when you port your number from one provider to another. The basics again… Donor – The current Mobile Service Provider the subscriber is moving away from. Recipient – The preferred Mobile Service Provider the subscriber is moving to.

The porting process is summarised into the following steps:

A. PRE-ORDER PROCESS:
1. Customer visits preferred operator’s (recipient) retail shop to request porting service.
2. Recipient discusses MNP process & implications with Customer.
3. Customer agrees to initiate porting process or not. If yes,
4. Customer presents valid proof of identification, provides requested ID information.
5. Recipient operator verifies customer ID.
6. Customer fills out and signs Porting Request Form.
7. Recipient operator checks porting form compiles Porting Approval Request and forwards it to the Central order handling system.
8. Customer Sends Validation SMS. This is basically all what you as a customer sees front-end and all you are interested in, maybe. But why have a doughnut and not get to the crux of the matter- the jelly. Read on, it gets a little more interesting

B. INITIAL CENTRAL ORDER HANDLING SYSTEM ORDER VALIDATION
Central order handling system receives and matches the porting approval request with customer authorisation SMS and checks that the:
1. The number is a valid number within the Nigerian numbering plan.
2. The number belongs to the donor operator specified in the porting approval request.
3. The number is not already subject to a porting request.
4. The number has not been ported within the last 90 days.
5. Customer validation checks have been confirmed by the recipient operator. The porting approval request is rejected if two or more of the initial validation checks fail. The central order handling system then submits a check to the Subscriber Information database to confirm whether the number being ported has been registered or not. If no, the central order handling system will reject the porting approval request. If yes, the central order handling system will send a positive porting order validation response to the recipient operator, advise the customer by SMS that their porting request has been received and pass the
porting approval request to the donor operator for review and approval.

C. DONOR ORDER VALIDATION:
1. Donor operator checks whether the number(s) to be ported is/are active and have not been reported stolen or lost.
2. The donor operator will accept or reject the porting approval request based on (i) above.
3. The donor operator informs the central order handling house of the acceptance or rejection of the port approval request by the sending of a positive porting approval response.

D. PORTING PROVISIONING:
1. The central order handling system allocates next available porting date on receipt of porting approval response.
2. Forwards the porting approval response to the recipient operator.
3. The recipient operator activates the customer’s number on its network
4. The recipient operator sends a porting deactivation request to the central order handling system.
5. The central order handling system sends SMS- “Change SIM” to the customer advising the customer that their number is due to be ported and requesting the customer to swap the SIM card from the donor (old) mobile service provider with the SIM card from the recipient (new) mobile service provider,
6. The central order handling system sends broadcast message to all mobile service providers and other authorised parties requesting they update their own routing databases to route calls to the customer via the Recipient operator’s network.

E. PORTING CLOSURE:
1. The Donor operator deactivates the customer from its network on receipt of the porting deactivation request.
2. The Donor operator sends a porting deactivation response to the central order handling system.
3. The central order handling system closes the porting transaction on the system, sends a porting update request message to the central
4. Subscriber Information database, to update records for ported number to show that it is now residing with the recipient operator.
5. The Subscriber Information database sends a porting update response message to the central order handling system confirming the subscriber information records of the ported number(s) have been updated.

So, every ported number comes with a new Sim card. Anyway, I am not porting any of my numbers, no matter what!
