Jonathan, forgive Boko Haram — Turai

Turai, wife of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to forgive the Boko Haram sect as her late husband did to former militants in the Niger Delta.

The former first lady advised Jonathan not to listen to anyone who advises him not to grant the sect amnesty.

She said this in Lagos on Friday night during the Award Gala Night organised by the Niger Delta Young Professionals.

Turai said, “When Yar’Adua saw that the people in the Niger Delta, particularly the children were dying callously, he (Yar’Adua) took it upon himself to grant amnesty to the militants to ensure lasting peace.

“There is poverty in the North. What Yar’Adua did in the Niger Delta, let Jonathan do the same thing to the North.

“Mr. President should not allow his advisers to deceive him. Let him sit down and think about the insecurity in the North.”

She said she respected her late husband and would continue to do so till her death.

She also advocated youths’ empowerment, saying if the youth are empowered, the country would be empowered.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has blamed northern leaders for the continued Boko Haram violence.

The President, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, said northern leaders had not done enough to unmask those behind the group’s activities.

He said, “When the issue of Niger Delta was raging, and I will say this with all sense of responsibility, leaders of the region, particularly the governors, were the drivers of the process.

“They reached out to the people and to the militants, they spoke and took their discussion, to an appreciable level before the Federal Government stepped in and then harnessed everything.

“What efforts are the northern leaders making? We need to learn because every incident of Boko Haram in Nigeria is situated within the geopolitical confines of a region. What are the leaders doing?

“Security agencies are not magicians – they are not spirits. These people who perpetrate these crimes do not come from the moon; they live within them. Why are they not helping the security agencies with the needed information? The problem of insecurity is not only the problem of government – it is the problem of all of us.”

He said the Federal Government was making efforts towards solving the problems.

“What we solicit from Nigerians are understanding and patience,” he stated.

He said when the late Yar’Adua and himself decided to take the initiative to address the restiveness of Niger Delta militants, they knew the people they were speaking to and knew where they could go and see them, either in their creeks, headquarters or homes.

“We reached out to them and spoke to them. We understood each other and on the basis of that, an understanding was reached and it was this understanding that was faithfully executed that led us to the amnesty in the region,” he said.

He said in the case of Boko Haram, their perpetrators were unknown, except for a few of them who spoke on the Internet or to the press.

At the awards five persons were recognised including late Yar’Adua (posthumous); Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio; his Lagos State counterpart, Babatunde Fashola; Chairman, Arik Air, Mr. Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide and 10-year-old author, Daniella Dan-Jumbo.

The people of the North are tired of all these things happening. I think if the amnesty would work, so be it but if it wont work; then we are going to see more losses in the north except a viable solution is proposed undecided undecided

Errant nonsense from a foolish woman who nearly 'became President' after the demise of her husband, forgetting Nigeria is not a 'family affair politics' or 'oye idile'! undecided

Not trying to question her sincerity on the burning boko haram issue but I never heard Madam Turai's voice when innocent citizens from the South/Southeast were being massacred in the North?

I did not hear Madam call on her brothers bombing Churches, Motor parks etc and killing innocent people...

What moral justification does Turai Yar'adua have to offer advice on this issue of Boko Haram amnesty? Is she speaking as a victim of Boko Haram or as a beneficiary of the proposed amnesty package

Turai Yaradua is now a saint, a woman who ran Aso Rock like her kitchen with the assistance of Michael Aondoakaa. Jonathan's response is very accurate. We need to know the faces of Boko Haram, just as we knew the faces of MEND, example, Tompolo and others. Without seeing their faces and knowing their residences, JTF will keep making life uncomfortable for the killers of Christians and Igbos in the North. And there must be collateral damages, I am not unapologetic about that. God must punish people who kill others for wants of power and desires of Allah. The North has not yet suffered, when they suffer enough, they will bring out members of Boko Haram. Full Stop!

She knows fully well that any attempt to get to the root of Boko Haram, many heads will roll, including hers. Since Boko haram is a destabilzation tool use by Northerners to frustrate GEJ's administration.

Forgiveness here is a SIN.

Just to paraphrase the late Sardauna: The South is an eternal estate of the North. And it must be treated as such, from the plains of Gumel in Jigawa, to Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island, it is all ours.

The North feels when things don't go their way, they take it by force, either via BH or otherwise. My only grouse in all this back and forth is with the South. Their lack of a united front is really the bane of our false democracy... Have a United front and then the irrelevant ones like Turai will not have the guts to spit in our face... angry angry angry angry angry

The same woman that schemed and scammed and allowed her deceased husband rule the country from the land of the dead,,with his corpse brought in at night and forced on us all
The most vulnerable time in that nation in recent history was orchestrated by this evil woman
Nonsense
Do they think we have memory loss
How they told us the dead president played ludo and drank tea
And this same Jonathan never set eyes on him
This deceitful witch is not fit dole out suggestions to anyone
If Nigeria were decent ,she would be in prison eating watery beans.

Jonathan should split the country into governing regions
Let everyone answer their father's name

Jonathan should take necessary step on amnesty, either amnesty or taking other measures....cuz is like i want to subscribe with what a PDP chieftain here in my area said about boko haram and jonathan's plans....he said jonathan want to leave dem with dia activities till 2015.....den INEC will not allow any electoral activities to take place in d northwest and northeast during the general election based on d level of insecurity in the area....therefore the chances of GEJ will increase.....

Nigerian women proving to be very heartless day by day.smh.

Madam u want Amnesty for ghosts?
In your epistle all i see is full sympathy for bh and little or no sympathy for their senseless killing of thousands. While d blood of d recently killed in kano is crying for vengeance, you're pleading for d killers.
It says a lot about d kind of heart u have cos if u have lost some loved ones to bh activities, u wont be shameless enough to vomit such.
My advice to you is go and take care of your children n grand children. And if u know who bh boys, call them to order n stop seeking popularity over innocent blood

For all those who claim the Amnesty granted to the criminals in the NDelta worked. I have one question, has any and I mean any of those villages that had no portable water or have 11th century type civilization, have their situation gotten better? The answer is no.... The amnesty granted to those criminals only achieved one aim.... Free flow of the petro dollars from the creeks of the NDelta. The ogonis are still fighting to have their land, which has been declared a major catastrophe by the UN, cleaned. The victims of Mobil oil spill in Akwaibom are still crying, the fisher men in the Delta haven't had a change of fortune... So someone please tell these ppl to shut f*ck up...
