jmoore: Because BBC is not owned by the Nigerian government.

Thank you my brother! You can now see why Nigeria is so backward and corrupt-tribalism.
I understand the resentment being spewed out here but Hausa is one of the richest African language(indigenous) with gender notations (linguistics) and its spoken in about 10 Countries. Hausas are very humble people however The situation in Nigeria is very different, the Nigerian Hausas are un-educated (not all of them though), poor, arrogant, and tries to be dominant and violent in behavior. I think poverty, ignorance and religion are majorly responsible for this violent nature.
Corruption and religion has destroyed what otherwise what would have been a great African tribe.

Ola Johnson: I've come to realize that most of the people on NL don't understand some of the topics on threads. The worse thing that can happen to a man in any academic setting or discourse is not to have a knowledge of what is being discussed but still takes part. The farther he goes the more he disgraces himself.

There's a quick rush to type fast on this forum and sometimes, 'rushing' a topic to FP attracts it to every Tomiwa, Dickson & Haruna who may be willing to comment and force opinions on others rather than engaging in intellectual discussions.

naptu2:

This is one of the reasons why Radio Nigeria and the NTA should have indigenous language stations that broadcast the news, sports programmes, etc. It helps to ensure that these languages survive and it also enables people at the grass roots to understand political and economic issues that affect them.

Frank Nwike Jr suggested that such stations should be set up when he was minister of information. Unfortunately they weren't. I hope the onset of digitalisation and increase in channels would usher in such language stations.

I was quite distressed when Ben Bruce closed down NTA Channel 7.

Hmmm.

Radio Nigeria in Lagos has Bond FM 92.9 and Choice FM 103.5. I don't know which way they are going but it seems the DG wants to reposition RN stations. They even want to have a dedicated Sports and Business station. It appears those 2 stations are for indigenous languages, Bond fm caters for the 3 languages whilst Choice sometimes uses Yoruba. They operate like Positive Fm 102.5 Akure. Methinks, FRCN still tries to inculcate our languages in our programmes but more ccould be done.

Bruce is an 'entertainer'. If you see the way Silverbird is going, NTA 7 existing under him will look laughable.

There has been clamour for community radio stations. The Cool fm/Nig Info/Wazobia fm + Classic fm/Naija fm/Beat fm shows the way. . .competition will make for diversification and specialization.

As an aside, there's this unfortunate stereotype among our supposed graduates/academics who classify anyone speaking any of our dialects as 'razz'. O ma se o

Rexxie:
AGREED,BUT WHY IS IT THAT ONLY THE HAUSAS/FULANIS IN NIGERIA OR MAJORITY OF THE HAUSAS IN AFRICA LOCATED IN NIGERIA ARE MOSTLY INTERESTED AND ARE ALWAYS TUNING THEIR TRANSISTOR RADIOS FROM SHOT WAVE (SW) TO MEDIUM WAVE (MW) TO EVEN BAR BEACH WAVE! (BBW) KINI WÓN FE'GBO, EVERYTIME?
Will I use the same logic to ask store owners at Nnamdi Azikwe, Idumota the same thing?

I listen to VOA, VON, DW, BBC World Service, CRI etc on such transistor radios. It has nothing to do with any Hausa man or what have you. I even prefer it to Nigerian stations that play more music than talk.

For anything, it shows that such people are better informed by listening to such media.

This had always been the most unfortunate and counter productive, senseless and meaningless stereotype-that Hausa/Fulani folks are all stupid by many misguided southerners.
Even after what has happened before our eyes in the last 50 years? Big mistake, if you ask me.

What happend over the 50 years was influenced by the British hierarchy, which was created because certain leaders of certain groups were more willing to become playthings for them.

Are french and English African language , arabic is spoken in north africa mind you the whole of north africas population is not up to northern nigeria talkless of adding other countries in west and central africa plus sudan and libya and for your infomation the sudanese president mother is a sudanese hausa

Egypt is the second largest country in Africa. Everywhere Hausa is spoken, there is also a presence, if not a dominance, of the Arabic language. The Hausa language itself has loaned many words from Arabic.

You will expect the leaders of the Fulani/Hausa to use their much vaunted reach across the length and breadth of this beautiful continent to do good. . To be agents of modernization and development just as the Chinese and the Japanese have done in Asia or the Americans in the west. , but that wont happen. This haughty colony of Tasmanian devils have rejected every plea to take a step forward. What we have here is a bunch of desert iguanas desperately pulling a whole generation/continent/race back with their confabulated prehistoric cultural practices. Women are treated like ordinary property, formal education is abhorred, violence is celebrated while corruption and ineptitude have become their gifts to the whole world as the quest to turn west Africa back into the hands of western imperialists becomes a do or die affair.. . Inadvertently they have created a gullible, ignorant and vulnerable population. Millions of unskilled illiterates waiting on the BBC to tell them that an igbo trader used the Koran to wipe his ass so they will go ripping pregnant women open after Friday prayers.. Under such environment , raw western propaganda has become gospel and the rest of us sharing this space with these people are forced to bear the consequences. I hope that someday we will have a serious government willing to emulate the Chinese or the Ethiopians and start blocking some of these western radio frequencies. . If the Hausafulani refuses to save himself, we have to march up north and save him from himself. This country is so important to the black race to be left in the hands of primordial thinkers. Never again.

Hausa spread through trade and pilgrimage to mecca in the olden days muslims go to mecca on foot and this takes them years to accomplish my grand father left for hajj on foot in 1918 it took him twelve years to come back in 1930.

On his route to mecca they stopped in every major town and hustle and rest for some days if not months before proceeding. He arrived at sudan in 1920 where he stayed for 3 years before crossing the red sea in 1923. Actually he even married a lady in sudan where there is a large hausa community he got separated with the lady when he was leaving sudan.

He spend 2 years in saudi and started coming back to Nigeria in 1925 but on his way back he missed his way and appeared in cameroon a town called Ngaundere from there he found his way back to Nigeria in 1930

The essence of the above story is to tell you how the language spread in west, central and north Africa.

So why is Nigeria the way it is then?

Colonialism is not the cause of everything but to pretend that it did not have regressive effect is being dishonest. Do you think bleaching of the skin was big before the British or after?

50calibre: Because our colonial masters trusted the savages called Hausas and handed the reins of power to them while regarding other tribes (especially Igbos) as rebels because they knew we wouldn't be subservient to them.

Even when on the two occasions the queen visited Nigeria, she only went to the north. Now they are learning the hard way.

This kind of statement depicts a very shallow mind, uncultured behavior and unstable thought process. It also shows the person's brain and psychological maldevelopment in his mother's womb and also at infancy stage.

And they found good monkeys to fill in. You were the British's lackeys so who were the primitive ones?

Lord Lugard's masterpiece indirect rule was developed in Northern Nigeria. Instead of ruling the fools directly they used your leaders as a errand boys and you were just as happy as could be cheesy

That's how much smarts they thought you had. They threw up a cheap smokescreen and you ate it up. Which is why the North fell before the south did.

Many bigoted Nigerians just cant stand the simple fact that Hausa is the most widely spoken language in Africa after Swahili.

BTW, here is a BBC Interview video of Ghanian President speaking Hausa. His command of the Hausa language is stunning.

Really? Is this how deluded you are? You couldn't be any farther from the truth. From your tirade here I'm guessing you are Hausa but I'm sorry it is a fact well known that Hausas are savages, a sentiment shared by most Nigerians.

Go on the state department websites of most western countries, you would find caveats there advising potential visitors to Nigeria to avoid the Northern region.

I know the truth can be a bitter pill to swallow but put aside your tribal loyalty that so clouds your judgement and return to rationality.

1) Wow! So the Queen never visited Lagos, Benin, etc during her visit to Nigeria in 1956! How come I have pictures and video footage of her visiting Lagos at that time and how come my mum told me about the reception for the Queen in Lagos?

2) How many Hausa heads of state/government have we had in Nigeria?
