Mr. Grim Reaper:
Another Dana in the making.

The Nigerian airforce has aircrafts sitting on the ground that has not been maintained in years. Anyone who flies into Lagos airport is greeted by a parade of brokendown C-120s and helicopters. The other day, a Nigerian Airforce Gunship was flying above and I could see alot of smoke coming out the main rotor engine.

Now they have graduated to Boeing planes for troop transport. Anyways, I wish them well. But seeing as this is still Nigeria, I will be cautious before boarding that plane. Remember that it was a Nigerian Airforce Helicopter that killed Azazi & Yakowa.

ignorant fool

naptu2: In some countries such as Iran, the military engages in commercial ventures. This has also been the case in Nigeria for a while now.

The Nigerian Army manufactures drugs, is involved in real estate and civil engineering business.

The Nigerian Navy is also involved in real estate business.

The Defence Industries Corporation (DICON) was involved in salt making.

Etc.

However, the question is, can the NAF effectively and efficiently run an airline?

Do NOT spread falsehood. The Iranian military/Airforce does NOT engage in commercial transportation.

That most pilots in the Iranian airline operations were former pilots in the Iranian Airforce is not the same as engaging in commercial transportation.

Read this sentence carefully again so that you'll understand the meaning.

The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (Persian: سپاه پاسداران انقلاب اسلامی ‎ / Sepāh-e Pāsdārān-e Enqelāb-e Eslāmi, or Sepāh for short), often called Revolutionary Guards, is a branch of Iran's military, founded after the Iranian revolution.[1] Whereas the regular military (artesh) defends Iran's borders and maintains internal order, according to the Iranian constitution, the Revolutionary Guard (pasdaran) is intended to protect the country's Islamic system.[2] According to some outside observers, it is intended to prevent internal dissident and military uprisings.[1]

The IRGC has roughly 125,000 military personnel including ground, aerospace and naval forces. Its naval forces are now the primary forces tasked with operational control of the Persian Gulf.[3] It also controls the paramilitary Basij militia which has about 90,000 active personnel,[4] and in recent years has developed into a "multibillion-dollar business empire,"[5] and is reportedly the "third-wealthiest organization in Iran" after the National Iranian Oil Company and the Imam Reza Endowment.

IRGC first expanded into commercial activity through informal social networking of veterans and former officials. IRGC officials confiscated assets of many refugees who had fled Iran after the fall of the Bani-sadr regime. It is now a vast conglomerate, controlling Iran’s missile batteries and nuclear program but also a multibillion-dollar business empire reaching almost all economic sectors.[5] It is thought to control around a third of Iran's economy through a series of subsidiaries and trusts.[59]

The Los Angeles Times estimates that IRGC has ties to over one hundred companies, with its annual revenue exceeding $12 billion in business and construction.[60] IRGC has been awarded billions of dollars in contracts in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, as well as major infrastructure projects.[61] The following commercial entities have been named by the United States as owned or controlled by the IRGC and its leaders.[62]

▪ Khatam al-Anbia Construction Headquarters, the IRGC’s major engineering arm & one of Iran’s largest contractors employing about 25,000 engineers and staff on military (70%) and non-military (30%) projects[51] worth over $7 billion in 2006.[62]

▪ Oriental Oil Kish (oil and gas industry),[63]

▪ Ghorb Nooh,[63]

▪ Sahel Consultant Engineering,[63]

▪ Ghorb Karbala,[63]

▪ Sepasad Engineering Co., (excavation and tunnel construction).[63]

▪ Omran Sahel,[63]

▪ Hara Company (excavation and tunnel construction),[63]

▪ Gharargahe Sazandegi Ghaem.[63]

▪ Kayson Construction Company ( Foreign Branch, active in Venezuela)

In September 2009, the Government of Iran sold 51% of the shares of the Telecommunication Company of Iran to the Mobin Trust Consortium (Etemad-e-Mobin), a group affiliated with the Guards, for the sum of $7.8 billion. This was the largest transaction on the Tehran Stock Exchange in history.[64][65] IRGC also owns 45% participation in automotive Bahman Group and has a majority stake in Iran's naval giant SADRA through Khatam al-Anbia.[51][66]

The IRGC also exerts influence over bonyads, wealthy, non-governmental ostensibly charitable foundations controlled by key clerics. The pattern of revolutionary foundations mimics the style of informal and extralegal economic networks from the time of the Shah. Their development started in the early 1990s, gathered pace over the next decade, and accelerated even more with many lucrative no-bid contracts from the Ahmadinejad presidency.[63] The IRGC exerts informal, but real, influence over many such organizations including:

▪ Bonyad-e Mostazafen va Janbazan (Foundation of the Oppressed or The Mostazafan Foundation)

▪ Bonyad Shahid va Omur-e Janbazan (Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs)[51]

So the antispam bot banned me and hid my post about the business interests of the Iranian Military. I hope it's made visible soon. When I'm unbanned I'll also post about the business interests of the Egyptian Military.

I believe their reason for acquiring a B 737-500 is for effective transportation of troups
particularly along with their peace keeping forces around the continent. Im witness to the
fact that such exercises of troop transportation had been done through the chartering of
commercial airplanes both at home and abroad and in some other cases through the provision
of United Nations aeroplanes.
The essence of an aeroplane is the purpose it is put to, therefore even as the type is used
mainly for civilian transportation it can also be used militarily. As compared to the military
Hercules C 130, the Boeing is a jet plane while the C130 is a propeller driven plane. The advantage
with the Boeing is in terms of speed and range. The only advantage the C130 has over it is in
its short take off and landing capability and operation over rough terrain, a condition thats
not so much the case in these days.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian Air Force Holding Company said

Also speaking at the occasion, the Group Managing Director, NAFHC, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Kure, said the aircraft would commence operations with the initial client base of mainly Armed Forces, Police and other para-military force.

Key words: commence operations, initial client base, mainly Armed Forces, Police and other paramilitary force.
