Another check-up now now? It appears the possibility of an Ijaw man being president of Nigeria in the very very near future is no longer an unrealistic projection. This man J. Goodluck seem to be just a heart beat away from being president. Well may be that will speed things up a bit in this country where nothing ever seem to change. Oya let every body join me in prayer for Goodluck.

4 Play:

You can't have a world-class hospital in a cesspit of a nation.

Lets say it costs $100m to build one.Remember you have costly maintenance to undertake to retain standards and you also have to hire top notch medical and other personnel to run it.

As a Gov,you also have other issues that are no less important demanding resources.What about providing world class water facilities,what about education,hospitals and clinics throughout the state,e.t.c? At the end,you are left with no choice but to split your meager resources in order to meet the various needs.

Its better to spend $100m across board-building small clinics,schools and water facilities-than to dole out a whopping amount to build a hospital of the same standard as he visits in Europe.Actually,its your kind of thinking that is behind the phenomenon of 'white elephant' projects which dot the landscape of Nigeria.

Iran has a world class stem cell research center. at some point, a country of 150million should have a world class medical facility. a medical check up doesn't require world class facilities either. it seems yar adua doesn't trust nigerian doctors.

I can actually see some very incisive points raised on this thread by the last few contributors.
1. It's possible he has already been going to Germany for medical attention b4 becoming the president (i.e, apart from the one we all knew of during the PDP campaigns last year). ALthough this is highly doubtful and can always be easily verified, the fact still remains that even if he was going there for medical attention previously, he is now going there funded entirely by tax-payers' sweat, and if he's a true patriot, he should have stopped doing that by now. Otherwise the implication is that he is simply advising poor Nigerians who are suffering from similar ailments to his to prepare to die, if they cannot sponsor themselves abroad for such treatment that's basic.

2. 2ndly, sincerity, honesty and straightforwardness in government cannot be overemphasized. NOBODY needs to go abroad for a routine check up, or treatment for "allergies", but if it's something more serious, then Nigerians deserve details. don't say it's minor and yet u give it attention equivalent to a great distress!

@Alfaprime
dead people are not patriotic wink

but i agree with you on the details part, seems people are not allowed to question his PA on communications, or perhaps the journalist weren't there when he made the announcement, they could have at least asked him why the president is going abroad abi its part of patients confidentiality?

I'm just worried about the security implications. A president fitted abroad with health and other devices could easily be compromised.

That's to tell you that we are all doomed here in Africa with the poorest of health facilities! Soon, they will be burying people there since our land may be contaminated with too much poverty!

It is embarassing that the president of the giant of Africa has to be flown overseas for medical treatment in this age and area (new millenium!), while our health facilities rot away in neglect.

Why can't we fix our hospitals and clinics and bring them up to acceptable standards?

Now the Nigerian Police is advocating for compulsory annual medical checkup abroad for officers in the rank of ACPs upwards. (see link below)
