Ghana Seeks Nigeria‘s Assistance On Elections by bluehorizo(m): 10:15am On Apr 16, 2008
A Ghanaian former vice president, Prof. John Atta-Mills, has requested Nigeria‘s assistance in making the December 7 general election in his country free, fair and transparent.

Mills made the request on Tuesday in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, during a visit to former governor Orji Kalu.

He said that time had come ”when Africans cannot rely on foreign friends for our elections.‘.

”I believe that Nigerians are interested in democracy. I want Nigerians to take interest in our forthcoming election and make sure that it is free, fair and transparent.

“This is the gift that Nigerians can give to us,” he said.

Mills, who was vice president to Jerry Rawlings, said the situation in Zimbabwe was unfortunate and expressed hope that a solution would be found.

Mills, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress of Ghana, attributed the situation to insincerity of leaders.

He said, “There must be honesty, truth and in all, we have to think about the electorate, who are voting for us and whose destiny are in our hands.

”All political leaders must be guided by this simple fact. The decisions we are taking as political leaders, is it going to improve the lots of the people?

”If the answer is no, do not do it, but if yes, do it.”

He appealed to political leaders in Africa to stop the kind of ugly situation the continent was experiencing in Zimbabwe.

Mills said that it was not easy being in opposition in Africa, especially, in a polarised country like Ghana, where ”instead of looking upon ourselves as friendly rivals, we consider ourselves as enemies.”

He called for a change on the deprivation and discrimination against opposition members.

According to him, in every political contest one person must win and the person who loses should be accommodated.

”We need to learn from the best practices. It is not enough to perpetuate this disease regarding opposition members as enemies.

”This is because we need to know that you need the opposition also to put pressure on the government to do the right thing,” he added.

The NDC presidential candidate stressed that time had come for African leaders to know the meaning of the ballot because democracy included free choice expressed though the ballot.

”You cannot say you believe in democracy and you do not believe in the ballot. We must learn to use the ballot and use it effectively for the purpose it is meant. The political leaders need to

learn more,” he said.

Mills said that the John Kufour‘s administration had failed the people of Ghana and that the people were crying for a change.

He expressed the hope that NDC would win and give the people the desired hope.

Mills said the only reason why people vote was for an improvement in their standard of living.

He said that Kufour‘s government had failed to meet the desired benchmark.

Ewu Cameroon!!! When did Orji Kalu turn to Nigeria? Atta Mills was asking Nigeria assistance and not Orji Kalu. You're the one that actually needs to start right back from elementary school
