Yet To Speak At 29 Months, Should I Be Worried? by jumsnarol: 9:44am On May 03, 2013
Mummys in the house pls i need to know if its alright that my 29months old boy is yet to speak. He can hardly get a word through talk let of a sentence. I think he only says about 3 recognisable word for now. Should i be worried? Most of his age mates are already talking well, although i know children develop at different rates but for a 29 months old not to say much ! Pls i nid to know if there is anyone with similar experience.

There is no need to be worried so long as he responses at all. I once had a neighbour whose four + daughter could not talk but today she is good. Always speak to him. Part of the reason is that he is not mixing up with other kids or people let him be free in the mist of others with close observation. And most of all let him start school it will help alot,my daughter started sch at 4mths before she was 1yr seven mths she could make a sentence.
Let him start sch, then he ll mix up with other kids of his age and be motivated to do or say what they do. Do pray about it too.

As long as he can make incoherent words, he is good. Perhaps the child is exposed to two or more languages so getting a fix on one is a problem

He is in school already and i forgot to mention that i gave birth to him at around 32weeks with lots of complic
ations. So i dont know if that could be a reason too.

I don't think all these are factors. As long as he can say incoherent words, he is good. He is just slow and I mean slow to talk.

He might even turn out a talkative at last sef cheesy

Hello,
I understand your plight. But I do not think you should be overly worried. My boy was almost incoherent till about 4+. Even at six, its only when he is reporting someone that he is vocally sharp grin. But his 3 yrs younger sis started VERY active verbal lashing @ just 2 yrs old.
As far as he does not display any other worrisome trait then I guess he would do just fine.
Cheer up wink wink wink

If he co-ordinates well, then he is ok but if he is havin problem cordinating, take him to a child specialist.a friend of mine has a similar problem.complications at birth.when she is supposed to start pickin words they were slurr kind of.she was also slow.d mum was told to wait and d rest,by d time she sought medical intervention, nothing could be done again
Pls watch ur baby closely,if all is well except that, then no need to worry
Re: Yet To Speak At 29 Months, Should I Be Worried? by Nobody: 7:22pm On May 03, 2013
OP, you should be worried. A 29 month old should be saying considerably more than 3 words. You should take him in for an evaluation. At the very least, get his hearing checked, but I would recommend a full evaluation. Are there cases of children who did not say anything till 4 and then started talking non stop like some said? Perhaps. But that was not normal and they were just lucky to have a good outcome. It is always better to be proactive early in these types of situations.

Is he the first born? If yes, that could be a reason?
Is he naturally cool and reserved? If yes, that could be a reason.
Is he exposed to more than one language at the same time? If yes, that could be a reason.

However, does he hear and understand when he is talked to? if yes, then, no problem.
Does he cry aloud when hes crying? If yes, no problem.
But for full confirmation, take him to a peadiatric doctor for proper evaluation.
It is well and my regards to him.

At OP, just as ileobatojo has said, you ought to be worried. A non verbal child at 29 months needs to be checked out. Take him to a child specialist and have him evaluated.
Does he respond to his name? how is his eye contact? how well does he interact with other kids?
Dont mean be a doom's bearer but it's better to err on the side of caution. Early intervention is key. Have him checked out asap
Re: Yet To Speak At 29 Months, Should I Be Worried? by Nobody: 6:28am On May 04, 2013
think you should be a bit worried - but they do say boys develop slower than girls.

Get him checked out by a child specialist.

What you can do in the mean time is speak to him more (almost like an adult) as if you are having a conversation - read story books to him.

The 2 languages thing i don't really think is an issue.

@ OP
you do not have to worry but do these:
1. find out if he hears or responds to your communication with him
2. keep talking to him and encourage him to respond
3. take him to the hospital for further diagnosis

Making sounds doesnt qualify them as being "verbal" in the sense of communicating. wink

At 29 months, a toddler should have quite an arsenal of words, and be able to begin forming sentences. Obviously this isn't always the case, some infants development may be delayed for different reasons, not all of which are issues.

But, you're clearly concerned, so you need to get your toddler checked, if not for anything else, your peace of mind. I don't really understand how anyone would have concerns about their child, and prefer to ask for advice on a public discussion board. Aren't there specialists where you are? Children are priceless, and specialists have been asked all manner of questions, so please don't feel you're being a nuisance by relaying your concerns to them, regardless of how mundane they may appear to you.

I would call the emergency services at 03:00 AM if I had any concerns about my children, no ifs or buts. That's what specialists / doctors / pediatricians are there for.

Your son might have autism spectrum disorders. I hope am wrong tho. AUTISM has a lot of symptoms and a child not TALKING is a major symptom. Read about the disorder online and also take the child to a pediatrician. I mean a specialist cos most of these pediatricians know little about it. ( I wrote my masters research project on autism so I know the awareness is low in Nigeria)
It could also be that your child only has speech disorder

What she said. Yea, 2yrs and some. You have something to be genuinely worried about. Act while they are still young, any issues will be easier to fix. And be less psychologically and emotionally damaging.

You dont need to be worried my dear,i have a nephew that started talking at the age of 4,we were worried initially but were meant to understand that children especially first child a times have delay speech because they don't have other children to play with.the boy is now a talkative...lol, don't worry you baby will speak.

Most likely your child will soon catch up with peers however it is always better to be safe than sorry. With kids one can't be too proactive, most problems can be corrected when they are addressed early so please take him to the pediatrician. Mothers have very good instincts so don't just shrug away your concerns.

Wouldn't hurt to take the baby in ( Ped) to rule out concerns you have instead NL would it?

I want to say a big thank u to all who took time to reply me but let me point out some things. I took him to d doc n was told to be patient that he will talk, although dat was mnths ago. He cordinates well in other area sometimes he acts older dan his age too. The only prob is speaking. I guess we ave to go see a speacialist den to be sure of wat is going on. But i remember it took a while to for him to cordinate his neck den. Wen babies his age were already holding thier head my baby's neck was still not standing until d week his paed gave us an appointment for a neck xray, we woke up n saw dat he could hold his neck (he was over five mnths old den) so sometimes i feel he just slow in developing, but at d same time one has to play safe.

Some posters already gave you some sound advise
Don't listen to anyone that says just relax,it is nothing,it probably is nothing but you need to be sure
If you have a feeling or unction that something is not quite right, you need to see someone.
Problems are better corrected at the onset not later

Besides speech, does the baby display undue anger and tantrums?
Are there any habits?
Does he socialize well with other kids
Does he make eye contact?
When you call him does he answer and walk towards you?
Does he imitate speech when you talk?

What type of doctor did you see and what tests did he perform?
Are you in Nigeria or Yankee?
This is critical
A doctor who is jack of all trade or one with no experience in child development issues will not help you much.

If this is your first born and the only problem is delayed speech and you are sure his hearing is right,it may not be unusual
My first child got me all worried too but is a very smart kid today

Ileobatojo talked about hearing, get his hearing checked by an ear specialist ,that is standard
You can follow up at home before then by standing behind him and call to see if he turns or answers.

Gosh
Now I feel like having a cute baby in my arms

Sweetheart, if you are a working mum or wife, then you shud know that Maternity leave in Nigeria is 3mths unless you are given special considerations. So that was my case, after 3mths i had to resume wrk and there was no provision for creche @ my place of work.
Check out some creche around you, and you would be amazed to see 2-3mth old babies there.

So a day care/ crèche is called a school in Nigeria?
Re: Yet To Speak At 29 Months, Should I Be Worried? by iffxwelkrested(f): 4:49pm On May 08, 2013
I'l suggest u reduce tv time... most parents let their kids spend most of their time in front of the tv probably watching cartoons. this doesn't help kids as kids from 0-36 months needs more interactive activities. engage ur child often in conversation even if he doesn't talk back keep doing it and he'll respond. don't overwhelm the child once he's no longer interested u'l know. most importantly, see a behavioural specialist to rule out autism. note: autism isn't a curse, it's treatable. good luck
