EX OIL MINISTER MONGUNO KIDNAPPED IN MAIDUGURI Former Nigerian minister, Shettima Ali Monguno, has been kidnapped in troubled Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. Mr. Monguno, 87, was kidnapped by gunmen as he left the mosque after Jumat prayers on Friday, in the Mafoni Ward area of the city. Mr. Monguno is a vocal and influential politician and educationist. The reasons for his kidnap is yet unclear. But the Joint Military Task Force keeping peace in the region had warned earlier in the week that the extremist Boko Haram sect had plans to embark on kidnappings for ransom. Reacting to the kidnap of the former minister, a journalist, Abdulrafiu Lawal, who knows Mr. Monguno well said the abduction was an indication that Nigeria has lost its values. Mr. Lawal said, “Shettima Ali Monguno has done so much for Borno and Nigeria as the country’s first petroleum minister who pioneered oil exploration in the Chad basin. “He retired from public service many years ago, sold his house in Abuja to build a female hostel for University of Maiduguri about seven years ago. “The only house he has now is the present one near Government House Maiduguri .He also donated all his books to the Borno state library about nine years ago. “He awards scholarship annually to students in the state, a thing state governments and politicians have only struggled to do. Does this harmless elder statesman who served his fatherland selflessly deserved this kind of treatment? We have lost our values.” http://premiumtimesng.com/news/132514-breaking-news-borno-politician-ali-munguno-kidnapped.html |

Seeing this on AIT Breaking News Bar. Hmmmmm. What the strategy is this time? Release their members just like that? You can't intimidate the state by this action BH. Ali Monguno is one of the weighty voice advocating leniency and amnesty for you so why kidnap him or is this another unintelligent plot by the sympatisers of this madness to get your murderer brothers of the hook? Just accept amnesty and stop these grandstanding. 1 Like |

By SaharaReporters, New York Some unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the islamist sect Boko Haram today kidnapped elder statesman Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno this afternoon at the Mafoni Jumaat Mosque immediately after he performed the Friday Jumaat prayers. The kidnappers forced the 87-year old into their car and sped off after shooting into the air to scare away worshippers at the mosque. Most residents are angered by this incident as they pray for his safe release by his abductors and pray for Almighty Allah to punish those indulging in such heinous acts and bring an end to their atrocities. His son Rahma Monguno has confirmed the incident. Rahma told Saharareporters by phone that the kidnappers have made contact with the family, but he said they are not asking for money but the release of some of their members detained by the government. Last week the JTF in Maiduguri had revealed that dreaded sect has changed tactics and was beginning to engage in kidnapping. Two weeks ago, the sect made $3.5 million from kidnapping a French family in Cameroon.

It is high time the North see and treat this bunch of cursed undesirable elements for what they are, boko haram have survived this far 'coz of the sympathy they've been enjoying in the north. Abducting a senior citizen in the mould of Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno should ordinarily signify the beginning of the end of insurgency in the north, but considering the level of complicity in this whole mess by some Ne'er-do-well elders in that same north, who rather politicize every situation in the north, you can't just put your money on it. Since the chicken is finally coming home to roost, it's high time leaders of opinion all over the country support government efforts in curbing this ugly trend before it spiral out of hand and set the region back into the stone ages. 6 Likes |

This is a very sad news. Ali Monguno served this country meritoriously in his younger days. He's still one of d very few reasonable elder statesman dat we have left in this country. Kidnapping him at age 87 is a demonic act. I pray he is released before any harm happens to him. 5 Likes |

This is pure politics. The man is very fine where he is. He might even be kept in one of the mansion of the northern politicians somewhere. The aim is to get the northerners angry with the govt for not accepting boko haram demands. They feel if they kidnap this man they will have more sympathy on the side of boko haram and demand a release. But this is Nigeria, we will not release terrorists into the streets because one man was kidnapped. The northern youths better get angry and say enough is enough to boko haram menace. That is if they will look beyond religion. 4 Likes |

Dr Ali Mongonu is one of the most respected elder statesmen in the north east. And one of those that had wage a 'relentless war' against the JTF occupation of Maiduguri. Instead of doing what a responsible elder should have done by calling the BH boys to order, he instead was busy blaming the federal govt for sending the military to help contain the BH insurgency. Well, Dr Mongonu, your kidnap is as a result of your inability to speak up against evil when you should. A responsible elder does not sleep when a snake is on rooftop. I pray you are released unharmed. 7 Likes |
