Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has asked Nigerians not to blame the violence in parts of the North on Muslims.

The group which also condemned the recent attacks in Baga and Bama, called on the Federal Government to caution those making inflammatory statements over the 2015 general elections.

The apex Muslim body stated this in a communiqué after its meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday.

In the communiqué read by the new Secretary-General of the council, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the NSCIA also urged the federal and state governments to implement the various White Papers on the ethno-religious crises in the country.

The council asked the Federal Government to immediately resettle all Muslims displaced in crisis-ridden areas in Bauchi, Plateau and Kaduna states and put an end to deliberate plans to exterminate Muslims in Wukari, Taraba State.

The communique read, “The security challenges in the country, especially in the North, are being blamed on Muslims, even when events have shown in recent times that many non-Muslim hide under the names of Boko Haram to perpetrate crimes.

“The persistent extra judicial killings of Nigerians by security agents, as in the recent cases of Baga and Bama in Borno State, to which the international community has attested, is not only criminal but also capable of encouraging lawlessness in the country.

“The government should, as a matter of urgency, caution those making inflammatory statements on the forthcoming 2015 elections so that the fragile peace in the country will not be jeopardised. All those being detained for alleged criminal activities should be prosecuted immediately.

“The council strongly condemns the Baga and Bama massacre as heinous crime against humanity and calls upon the Federal Government to immediately set up a judicial commission of inquiry to ensure that justice is done.

“The council frowns on the continual failure of the state and Federal Government to implement the White Papers of their commissions/panels of inquiry on various ethno-religious crisis and conflicts in the country.”
