Still trying to figure out what's so funny in this outdated thread and I couldn't find one. not in the thread, nor in the comments.

I guess I have zero sense of humour.

Ok, so I just graduated from school and told a couple of friends that I needed a job, one Saturday morning, a friend called me that her former boss who was starting his own company will be interviewing some applicant by 10am that same day at Ikeja. I was so unprepared I don't have a single cooperate wear cos all my cloth were skimpy undergraduate wears, the closest to it was a secondhand slim-fitted shirt and a very tight black trouser I wore on campus, unfortunately no light to Iron it and time was against me but I managed to look my best in it, together with my 3years old rugged shoe which has a bad heel that announced every step I take due to the protruding iron from it.
I manage to get there an hour late, upon entering the office I was shocked to see about 50 applicants all dressed in neatly ironed suits and perfectly polished shoes. I stood at the entrance for almost a minute with so many thought in my head am I at the right place? Should I just go back home? What post am I even applying for? I went out to check the address just to be sure I'm at the right place then went back in, looked for a place to sit beside a lady who was not seriously dressed like the others and waited for my turn, luckily, the lady asked if I've written my name I said no and she signaled the beautiful secretary dressed in a smart Red suit skirt she wrote my name, asked for my CV and application letter, that was when I realised I don't have an application letter then she ask which position did I apply for? Again, I don't know, she said how did I hear about the interview I told her the truth that a friend referred me to one of their director so she advised me to call the friend to notify the director that I'm around which she did. All the while all attention was on me I went back to my seat asked the lady beside me how she got to know about the interview and she told me their was a full page advert on Guardian NP!!! I asked her what position she applied for and she said cleaner/office assistance at that moment I realised how bad my dressing was. Eventually I was called in and my heartbeat increased, I was sweating like I just finished a marathon. As I was about to open the door to the conference room, I was lost in thought that I dint know when I did the sign of the cross 3 times and all the other applicants started laughing at me. Upon entering the conference room, seated were six richly looking men in their 50s at that moment I forgot everything I had rehearsed all I could think of is I can't impress these men, the A/C suddenly became too cold for me I started shivering and my palms were all wet I resolve to do my best and leave. I gave them my application letter for marketing position and my CV the MD asked a simple question have you market anything b4? I innocently answered 'yes I used to market underwear when I was in school' then he asked me do you know what we do here? Also, I said you represent a popular international manufacturer of electronics brand' then he asked apart from underwear what else have you sold? I told him I helped my aunty to sell cloth at Idumota, he laughed, looked at my CV then asked me how much am I expecting as salary and I felt not to scare them away so I asked for a very cheap amount. At last they asked me to wait outside. On getting back to the waiting room all other applicant were surprise to see me wait when those that appear better than I am had left. To cut a very long story short I was employed together with some other brilliant, good looking and experienced applicants. That was my fist Job in 2005

lols..... it ain't funny at all but my advic for job seekers is to be confident always... draw out a fear on ur mind even if the job will not be yours, your confidence would have sell enough....

I remember one interview that I wore casual dress to and even not sandal/shoe self though they flag it off after the interviews but I still got the job due to my confidence....

whenever I remember the manager and supervisor review I always feel happy for my nature..

lesson don't see them as God, take them as a new friend ,show your ability and dress properly because the way you dress is the way you will be adresss..Funkybabee quote

lol, the suit brouhahah, is sure embarrasing!!

just being asked that question alone is enough to make u embarrased!!,
thats my advice to all wud be job seekers.
save up n buy a suit.
it mustnt b too expensive, just go to cms/obalende, if u cant afford the 10k suits, n buy the fairly used ones, btw 3k n 5k depending on its condition.

wear it with a good shirt/tie, n u wud be presentable,
mine happened sometime ago,

my first real interview, when i finished service.

i had gone thru the first stage with flying colours.

a panel of 5 including the executive director.

then i was invited 4 the final chat the the director alone.

n guess what i just cudnt maintain eye contact with the director!!!!,

kept staring everywhere n anywhere except the directors face!!.

the least i cud muster was an occasional furtive look!!!.

damnnnnnnnnnnnn!, remembering that day alone, just makes me laugh now!!

grin grin @ the 2 paragraphs before the last.

Hi Babree,
I liked ur comment about carrying a sports mindset to interviews. It sure can help 'cos I hv bn in a similar position bf. Mine was not bc I wz imagining how much I would get but bc I wz scared of failure. Also, my interviewer said I wz not maintaining eye contact!

Earthrealm,
that brings me to ur post. Why do u think u were not able to look at the director's face. Were u scared or u didn't consider it important. Pls we can also learn from u. For now, I 've resolved to even stare at my interviewer if it's what it means 'cos the other time I spoke about I thought I wz maintaining eye contact 'cos I had it in mind, but at the end of the day, my interviewer complained!

The thing is when you stare too much, it means you are over confident or proud. The idea is for you to maintain Eye contact methodically. You can figure out formulae for that. If there are more than one panelists,it makes it easier, you can stare at each of them like a lecturer would in a classroom.

again, in interviews , make sure u eat very well before ur presentation. its rule number one. i had that experience that nearly cost me my confirmation in the organisation i work for.

in interviews you that i ve to look weak. u must display high level of energy.

my experience was out of excitement that i will land a good job with a bank.
i was invited for a chat with the Head of HR.
Immediately I got to the bank premises, I decided to put my handsets in one beep ring in order to avoid embarrassment. I had to hear it beep cos my boss could be trying to reach me as I left the office without permission.
Out of excitement, I left it in one ring instead of beep.
While in the middle of the chat with the Head of the HR, one of the sets started to ring; I was confused and the guy asked me to pick my call, as I quickly snatched and switched off the phone, I was still saying my apologies when the second one started to ring.
Oooh, you can imagine the face of my interviewer. I think that was when he took his decisions

Oh dear! Your village people finally caught up with you. #sarcasm

I use to be ashame of talking about them, i guess am talking about them because am some steps up the ladder now.

The first was immediately after my service year it was a big one the pay figure (like i gathered)  was  mouth watering and i was already calculating what i will do with the money and at that time i needed money bad.
on the D-day i was ask to read a paragraph from a book and yours truly was shaking all over like a leave on water it was so embarrassing, it never happened to me before. Believe me, am  very bold and good with presentations.

The cause
My head was calculating the pay and suddenly a fear of what will happen if i don't get the job gripped me

Lessons
1. Never count your chicks before they harsh
2. Go to the interview with a sport mind set  i.e you either win or loss
3. Don't  place all your value on the monetary aspect alone

My second experience was with a bank, i was just not prepared. I got the invitation  a day before the interview
and a dress code was specified.  I went in an oversized suit the top different from the bottom. The first thing the interviewer asked me was if am for the interview embarassed

Lessons
1. Always be prepared, do all you can and leave the rest to God
2. Get all the tips on dress code here.

A 2008 post made it to front page in 2019. This life ehn, just don’t give up.

My first interview was during my internship, 2016. It was in an oil company in lagos. I wore one dead suit (coat), i knew as soon as i got in that i don f*ck up. The receptionist dey look me like say i shit for body. This made me super nervous. I actually wore a parachute, forced on me by my parents. They said i looked smart in it. I be engineer, wetin concern me with tuck-in?
As i entered the interview room, based on my zero confidence, i turned around to lock the door before proceeding to take my seat without greeting anybody. As soon as i sat down, the insults started.

I con stand up again, dey say i'm sorry sir, i'm sorry ma. They just tell me to just go back that they are done with me. Mehn, na so interview take end o. As soon as i came out of the room, i saw guys on corporate, without suit. . I just dey curse everyone that contributed to my downfall.

I later learnt that you should not turn around to close a door when u walk in. Close it whilst facing front. I did not get the job obviously.

I received an interview invite a week b4 d interview day, I had rigorous preparation for basic interview questions, majorly bank related questions.

The first stage of the interview was successful because I was able to answer all the questions from the interviewers. Some of us were selected and we were told to wait for the second stage of the interview.

I was called for the second stage to meet with the top executives, was told to introduce myself and i did, another question was asked (what do you know about the financial institution?) and I lost my confidence and courage, I started talking about budget and revenue, GDP and national income. grin grin. I bleeped up, i was able to answer other questions successfully but not enough to land me the job.

I prepared for the major interview questions but unable to get the job because I didn't prepare for the on the job-related questions.
