*As Chime donates 100 vehicles

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar Wednesday declared Enugu State as having the lowest crime rate in the country, saying that this fact was buttressed by statistics and empirical
evidence.

Abubakar who spoke Wednesday while taking delivery of 100 brand new vehicles donated to the police by the Enugu State
Government, stated that this was largely a result of the tremendous
support that the administration of Governor Sullivan Chime has been
giving to the police and other security agencies.

In a statement sent to THISDAY by the Press Corp of the Government House Enugu, Abubakar was quoted to have said: “Today, I can confirm, as the Inspector-General of Police, that Enugu State has the lowest crime rate in Nigeria. I also confirm that Enugu is one the safest places in Nigeria. This is the result of the wonderful partnership between the Enugu State Government, the Police and other security agencies”.

He commended Governor Sullivan Chime for the gesture, saying it was an example that his colleagues should emulate.

ENUGU—Tragedy struck in Enugu Saturday night when the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu,  was shot dead by unknown gunmen.

His police orderly, Aloha Olaniyi and Driver, Oliver Omeh, who were with him at the time of the incident sustained serious bullet wounds  and are said to be lying critically at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.

The incident occurred at Amorji Nike, near the densely populated Abakpa  Nike area in Enugu East local government area within the state capital at about 10 pm.

The Police Commissioner, who reportedly visited his home in Enugu at the weekend, was driving into his private residence when the assailants who  may have laid an ambush around his residence attacked him and his aides about 100 metres away from his house.

CP Asadu, according to sources, had a visitor whom he escorted along with his driver and a police orderly posted to guard his residence from Abakpa Police Division, leaving behind the official escort team that came with him from Kwara State Police Command.

Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu

They were returning to the house after dropping the visitor when they suddenly noticed a bus trailing them behind as they branched into his street only for the gunmen to start firing at the vehicle from the rear.

The gunmen were said to have shot sporadically killing the CP and wounding the two policemen but before they escaped, they reportedly took away the rifle of the orderly whose body was riddled with bullets.

The orderly was shot on the chest, stomach, hands and leg while the driver was shot on his legs.
“The CP was driving into his personal residence in Amorji Nike after dropping a visitor that night.  He was with a police orderly and his driver at the time of the incident. Just about 100 metres to his house they noticed that a bus was trailing them behind and before they could know what was happening the gunmen opened fire and killed the CP instantly. His orderly and driver were also shot and they were seriously wounded.

“The gunmen ran away  in their bus before the CP’s escort team that was inside his compound noticed what was happening.  When the escort team and sympathizers rushed to the scene, they met CP Asadu and his orderlies in a pool of blood.  They were rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital where doctors confirmed the CP dead.  The other two policemen are now on admission at the hospital,” said the source.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the incident when Vanguard contacted him yesterday, describing the attack as very unfortunate.  He said that the CP was on a private visit to his home in Enugu when the incident occurred.

According to him, the police would do everything possible to fish out the assailants as investigations into the bizarre incident have already commenced.

The new Police Commissioner in Enugu State, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, was said to have directed his men to conduct serious manhunt for the gunmen within and outside the state capital in order to track them down without delay.

Meanwhile, doctors at the National Orthopeadic Hospital, Enugu are battling to save the two wounded police officers.  The orderly who was seriously battered by bullets, according to doctors, was said to be in a stable condition after the surgeries conducted on him throughout Saturday night.  The driver was also said to be in a stable condition.

There should never be crime in Enugu;Reason,There is no business there, hence,no money to steal. However, during the time of Nnamani Enugu was considered a death zone because of the political killings, which was rife, then. Like I pointed out earlier,Enugu should never have any crime issues because its mostly a civil servants and residential city. Ain't nothing to celebrate, here. Chime to me hasn't done much because all he did was to continue the beautification of the Coal city, which was started by Nnamani, while the rest of the state perish in abject neglet. But most Enugites are too naive to see the writing on the wall. Soon as they see a few beautiful pictures of Enugu city their head swell and they instantly forget that Enugu state is still 90% undeveloped villages. So long as Enugu city is fine the rest of the state can kiss the dust. Very gullible if you ask me. Enugites need to elect a governor in the mold of Peter Obi to deliver them from the shackels of their elites.

As usual your response stinks of bitterness and envy. Get a life. There's definitely crime in Enugu but its lower than most States in Ngeria. I might put up States like Zamfara and Sokoto as being more crime free though.

I don't think so. The crime rate of Ilesha and Ede alone is more than Enugu State. Then you add Oshogbo, Ife/Modakeke, Ikirun, Iwo and other smaller shanty and crime prone areas.

You are a complete dunce. Envy who for what, exactly ? Bitter over what ? Look at what bigotry has done to you ,Abagworo. The once culture section gem has fallen so low there is no hope of a redemption. Do yourself a favour, leave the politics section and return to your comfort zone, the culture section and just maybe you might stansd a chance of redeeming your image because at it is right now,you have lost the respect you once command.

Now to idea of your response; What did I put up there that can be called a lie ? Enugu city isn't a commercial hub,it has no big markets like Anambra and Abia. Its not known for housing industries. What is a robber gonna steal from there ? The only crimes that once thrived there were kidnapping and assasination and that is understandable because the place house mainly the most influential politicians in the southeast.

Fact remains that your response stinks of unnecessary envy. I just don't know why. I think you should come to terms with the reality that States are artificial boundaries created for political convenience and anyone could have been from one State or the other. Praise every success while you wish for yours.

The Ig claimed it was the partnership between Enugu goverment and the Police force made the state the safest in the nation and I disagreed with that. Reasons; There are other states in the nation that has spent more money on security and partnered with the police, yet, they have not been able to achieve the level of success recorded in Enugu. And I ask myself why. The more businesses you have and population the higher the crime rate. Its a common sense. I bear no envy for the state.

Odenigbo Aroli has a point about Enugu not being a commercial city hence the peacecful nature. But is it every non-commercial cities that are peacecfull? Are Borno, Yobe and Bayelsa commercial states? Yet they're one of the hotbeds of restiveness in Nigeria. Let's give credit as there are other factors which has made it what it is. Enugu is a cultured city simple.

@ Odenigbo, Nwa Umuoji you should know that they are a lot of deep pocket people in Enugu. One thing about the city is also that it's rich residents do not go about boasting about how rich they are, thereby attracting bad boys.

If not for some cases of student's cult-related crimes, Coal City still remains the most cultured city in Igboland. The three major markets in Enugu aren't populated by goats either!
On the issue of roads, all the local government areas in the state have good access roads. A great number of villages have mansions or bungalows like in other parts of Igboland as well.

The fact is that, those who did not expect anything good from the state are shocked by the progress it has made since its creation in 1991. We are not claiming to be the best now, but we are aiming to be the best in the future - this is the dream of the state's current administrators!
For such a small state to donate 100 vehicles to the police shows how serious it takes security. Security is a big deal in Enugu State!!

This Odenigbo Aroli of a guy sounds very bitter. Why cant we say the truth when we see one. He is talking as if security is determined by the population of a place? Lagos is the most populous state in Nigeria but is Lagos the most dangerous? China and India have the largest populations in the world but small countries like Jamaica, South Africa, Columbia, Mexico ect are far more dangerous. These are facts.

I am from Imo State and how many factories does Imo State have? Wont I be happy if my state is as safe as Enugu? What about Bayelsa, Delta, Yobe etc? How many factories do they have?

Talking about Peter Obi being a better governor than Chime shows this guy is drunk or simply jealous. Chime is miles ahead of Peter Obi in all ramifications. Show me one Nigeria state where the entire state is developed? Is it your Anambra or my Imo?
