The phenomenon of
godfatherism has become a plague in the body politics of
Nigeria. There is an emerging trend in Nigeria which indicates that an intending contestant
must have and depend on a
godfather with the requisite wealth and power to get their
candidates into elective office.
The implication is that
contestants no longer rely on their popularity among the
electorates but on their chosen
godfathers to help them secure
electoral victories. The dominant role of the political godfathers in
Nigerian politics and the competition amongst godfathers
to win elections for their godsons with the ultimate intension of controlling state
apparatus necessarily encourage the adoption of varying methods to achieve electoral victory. The
major political and social behaviours that have Continued
to dominate Nigerian polity since 2007 Elections are the prebendal and the clientele practices among politicians and public servants. It
can be argued that most of the politicians currently holding
various offices in Nigerian were
not motivated by true patriotism to serve the nation rather they
were driven by greed and the pathological urge to loot in order
to enhance their parochial interests. Elections in Nigeria are therefore, mere formality for the
confirmation of a candidate already selected by a godfather. Thus, the Nigerian electorates are deprived of their right to elect their preferred leaders. The
unique aspect of every sovereign
state in Nigeria is the nature of politics and the character of the
state. Godfatherism based on power relationship is often
skewed in favour of the godfather who can afford to lord it over the godson, if, he so wishes owing to his superordinate influence and
affluence. In party politics, godfathers determine who gets
nominated to contest elections and who wins in a state. It
should be noted that, the power and influence of godfathers go
beyond the nomination of
candidates for elections and
determining who wins. Over the years, Nigeria has practiced what can be described as fraudulent
democracy. Nigeria democracy has been characterized by
obnoxious acts such as indiscriminatel y using money and by very powerful and
influential members of the elite class, popularly called ‚political godfathers,’ imposing political
leaders on the people. And This situation has already become a
culture in Nigeria because many
politicians who want to contest and win elections always look for such persons to support them.
This means that they no longer depend on the electorates to win
elections, but instead rely on the political godfathers. This political culture was truncated since 2007
gubernatorial elections. They've change the good
government of the people made by the people and for the people to, government of their
family. These is a great challenge for Nigeria youths and progressive minded pple to wake
up from slumber.

I AM VIBRANT DYNAMIC NIGERIA YOUTHS . I REFUSED TO BELIEVE
AND ACCEPT THAT MY GENERATION IS WORTHLESS AND WASTED.
are you ready for the
change?
