I'm a 'libertarian'! You?
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 12:26am On May 19, 2006
I am a Statist. I love big brother (Government). grin

And Seun, I could have told you that you are an economic libertarian even without seeing your test result. (I am not going to call you a social libertarian because your censorship is rivalling that of Stalin cool)

Nice quiz, but I wish they would change Statist to Collectivist so it would be clearer.

I am not going to call you a social libertarian because you censorship is rivalling that of Stalin
That depends on whether or not you agree that the Nairaland Forum is my property! cheesy

update: And by the way, Representative Democracy is the government of those who have time to meddle in others' affairs. It's not government of the people in practice. People only vote for the lesser evil. QED.

But you hate homosexuals and you think government should lock them up!

Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(m): 1:37am On May 19, 2006
In the personal freedom axis, I'm right at the center (close to conservative) because I have doubts about people's ability to make responsible decisions when they enjoy absolute freedom. I don't yet understand how private courts and police would work, but I understand private production of other services quite well.
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 1:41am On May 19, 2006
Seun, courts and the police must be run without profit in mind. If you privatize them, they would just become an extension of the capitalists.

The empowerment of the working class is the only way to create an economically viable society. (Preferably a communist state)
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Nutter(m): 1:49am On May 19, 2006
The quiz has me down as a STATIST. I however don't agree fully with it's description. I don't think there are enough questions in the quiz to adequately tease out the mind-set of respondents.
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(m): 1:53am On May 19, 2006
You believe in Communism in the 21st century? Then let me tell you why I'm a capitalist to the core: it is because human beings are basically selfish. Capitalism embraces this fact and uses it to the benefit of society, while socialism tries to make people act against their natural instincts. In an effort to force people into acting "for the common good", socialist societies quickly turn into dictatorial states. Because people will always be people.

Do you think Nairaland will be here if I was doing it for any other purpose than to make a living? Heh, no way! The emotional strain sometimes is enough to make me just shut down the site, but i keep going because I'm enjoying the freedom to use what I have (webmastering skills, internet access, etc) to get what I want (financial independence and a platform to influence people a little). Freedom to pursue my interests in a way that also benefits others.

I am not forced to build this site, and you're not forced to participate, nor are the advertisers forced to place their ads here. Yet we find ourselves cooperating with each other in order to pursue personal interests. that's the way, man!
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(m): 2:03am On May 19, 2006
Seun, courts and the police must be run without profit in mind.
The best 'private police' I can imagine is to have the government regulating private armed groups for hire the way they regulate the drug industry. 'Private courts' are simply arbitrators. In fact, private security groups and arbitrators are already competing side by side with the state run systems. Arbitration is known to be cheaper than lawsuits. I don't really think there is any business run without profit in mind. Policemen must eat, too, and they know that! The only thing that differs is who is feeding them: private citizens or the tax machinery.

If you privatize them, they would just become an extension of the capitalists.
Well I'm a capitalist, and so is every Mama Put in Oshodi market. Police in our hands is in safe hands! cheesy
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 2:05am On May 19, 2006
Communism is so pure that nothing has ever come close to it. All the so-called communist states are actually statist-capitalist police states.

The way I see it, communism is the like the kind of relationship you have between family members. Its a lot more than personal gain. Its about combining your resources for the greater good of all.

You are right, that all past attempts at communism has end in disaster. But, the impact of a true communist state is far too positive to let a few major disasters deter us.

Besides, I am a sucker for anything that is going to ban religion. grin

I agree completely. The dad makes the decisions, the mom communicates them, and the children carry them out. So who gets to be the father in a country that is run by a family? The government. The children? The masses. When the children grow older and wiser, they leave, because this paternalistic system isn't ideal or realistic.
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 2:15am On May 19, 2006
Nice way at looking at it. That would explain the massive migration of people from communist states. However, the problem of people leaving would not be a problem if there was a glorious revolution. That way, the whole world would be communist!

I would actually go a step further and say that the reason so many aspiring communist states have failed is because of the greed of the proffesional class (Doctors, Lawyers e.t.c.).
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(m): 2:21am On May 19, 2006

Glorious revolution? There is no such thing; it only exists in the mind of political propagandists.

Nutter:

Tell us more about your political beliefs. Should government take money from rich people to feed the poor people? Should government create laws against victimless 'crimes' like homosexuality and smoking?
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 2:28am On May 19, 2006
I believe government should use tax as a sort of equalizer among st the classes. For example, if you make 3 thousand Naira a month, you pay 5 percent tax. If you make 100 thousand Naira, you pay 50 percent tax. I do not want to reduce society to a complete classless society because if it were, there would be no incentive for anyone to become a Doctor if they can make the same money as a elementary school teacher.

I am pro-gay rights. The government should not ban smoking, but having a heavy tax (70 percent tax or so) would be an appropriate step.

So in short, I believe in the use of tariffs, tax and subsidies to alter the behaviors of the people. I am not too big on using force or threats.

I also would not recommend forcing communism on people. It such an advanced form of government that you need to have the consent of just about every person in the country.
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(m): 2:47am On May 19, 2006
So in short, I believe in the use of tariffs, tax and subsidies to alter the behaviors of the people
And who determines what behaviours are right or wrong? Don't you think progressive tax of income alters people's behaviour to serve the needs of others less in order to avoid tax? What's the benefit of discouraging someone who wants to work really hard to make a lot of money? If people work hard and they are rewarded, good for them!
Re: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by DaHitler(m): 3:01am On May 19, 2006
The government decides what is right and wrong (I did say I love big brother). While progressive tax does create a disincentive effect on people, I think as long as you are still making moderate gains (in status, salary or both) you have enough incentive to do more. I do not like to look at the issue of discouraging people from working really hard as a + or - in of itself. I feel that the increased tax that is collected from the progressive system can be used to beef up public education and the standards of living of the lower class (subsidized housing and food stamps, free health care e.t.c.) which in turn would make the country more stable and safe. So the benefit to society as a whole would make it worth the disincentive effect.

The problem with "if people work hard and they are rewarded, good for them" is that what happens when they hand over their money to next generation that didn't work at all for the money? Once you get down that road, you would have dictatorship of the capitalist. In short, a ruling class that just happened to be born into the right family assume the role of leaders (Most likely incompetent leaders).

A Centrist leaning more to a Right Conservative!

CENTRISTS espouse a "middle ground" regarding government

control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on

the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention

and sometimes support individual freedom of choice.

Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind,

tend to oppose "political extremes," and emphasize what

they describe as "practical" solutions to problems.
