Should I Do My Msc In Norway Or Here In Nigeria by Ezegozie(m): 3:49am On Jun 20, 2013
Goodmorning Good people of nairaland. I am a final year student of unizik, from the department of Geological science .

By God's grace i will graduate with second class upper.
Sometimes, i have sleepless night thinking of my future and what my Job Life will be like when i graduate knowing fully well that i don't have any person in the job sector and judging from the inreasing high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

I have decided to do my Msc immediately after my NYSC here in Nigeria to specialise in either PETROLEUM GEOLOGY or GEOPHYSICS or travel to Norway to do my Msc, since education in Norway is free.

I want to stand different from the crowd when i start looking for employment.

Now my question is, will i have a better opportunity for employment than people who studied in Nigerian university if i do my masters in Norway and then come back to Nigeria to look for work?

Please, i am just a naive young man who dream to get job in Nigeria. I dont want to make a costly mistake of spending an estimated amount of 2.5 million naira for one year living expenses to study in Norway and come back only to live in joblessness and poverty which i believe is not my portion.

I will appreciate graduates, those that already have job, mature people and last but not the least Those that have travelled wide to give me a MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE that will posetively metamorphose my life in future. your comments will be appreciated.

Bro, you can apply to a school in Germany since their education is also free. However, out of 2.5m estimation for living expenses you had in mind for Norway, you can open a blocked account of 1.6m for a German student visa and besides, the money is still yours and you would just be fine. My opinion.

Here is some info on scholarships, grants and fellowships for international students that might be of some interest, in terms of saving you money, especially if you intend to return to Nigeria and try to establish a foothold after school:

http://www.scholars4dev.com/category/field-of-study/

Other than that, there are so many options available to you if you do decide to study abroad, from gaining work experience before returning (to enhance your employability back home), to obtaining citizenhsip, depending on where you go to study. It all depends on your ultimate objective. What you could do is give the mid to long range picture some more thought, do some research along those lines, and if you do have specific questions, raise them.

Cheers and all the best.

Thats a very nice advice from you. I so much appreciate that.

I will consider Germany. Because the i was told that cost of living in Norway is very high for an average nigerian like me.

Moreover, i was also told that Norway is not an ideal place to stay an work if you dream to be rich because finding skillful work there as an international person can be very hard unless you are fluent with their language.
And also, they pay so much tax (about 32%) of total income. And also spend so much on accomodation and transportation.

I am not from a rich background that will provide all these for me.

I also want a place where emplyment rate is not so low like Nigeria, where i can be employed in a skillful job upon completion of my masters.

Once again thank you all for your wonderful contributions

Go for Norway instead of Germany. The cost of living in Norway is high but it is a better country wth better opportunities

thanks mr Know it all

e be like say you hate Naija very well? Any way if i have the opportunity to go out there it will just be for education. I will just work there for some times to acquire work experience before coming back to Nigeria and work unless i get a very good Job there.

I love bussiness so much. So i think Nigeria is a nice place to work and do bussiness at the same time,
Live in a comfortable house and even drive big cars without so many TAX and BILLS
Or dont you think so?

Jenny you're the only person that says Germany is not okay to go to, everyone else in nairaland says germany is nice and there are lots of part-time jobs. Can you pls explain further why germany is not a good option in times of part-time jobs? Thanks

From my observation ur major concern is about getting a job not building a career. The truth Msc oversea without any working experience does little or nothing as regards increasing ur chance of getthng a job. What employers are interested in is what u have to offer (ur experience or skill) not ur Msc or phd. If I had that cash u talked about, I would disappear from 9ja to India or SA and get myself an ICT certification/skill in computer networking(CCNA). If u have passion for the IT world, go for any- ccna, cisco, ethical hacking etc .Every company need IT experts. Don't waste ur time & money on msc certificate in a bid to get a job unless u are thinking of a lecturing job. In the industry msc or phd don't count, they employ u and train u 4 to suit the job.

I am not in the line of computer, i am a geology student, anyway thanx for your message

yea, FEG213 handled by stingy NGINI.

But we were upto 4 departments that stayed in one lecture hall then. chem eng, elect eng, mechanical and Geology.

So how are you doing. Happy to meet you.
The scholarship is what category of people? 1st class, second class upper, second class lower or 3rd class?

This thread is quite educating. You guys are d bomb. It seems am curious just like ezegozie concerning opportunities in Germany and Norway. But if I may ask, between the two, which one offers high wage rate and business opportunities in terms of wat one can be loading in the container and sending back home? Now, assuming a person decides to study in Norway, like how much krone I'll the person be getting per hour? At the end, can one enroll for a certification course in may be age care, sales, project management, or mining if your background is from the arts and social science? Or can social science students still find something to pin down in Norway after studies? Your input is needed bosses.
