• As Presidency rejects state of the nation bill

Indication of a looming crisis between President Goodluck Jonathan and the two chambers of the National Assembly emerged yesterday as the president rejected the State of the Nation Address Bill forwarded to him by the National Assembly for assent since the first week of May. The rejected bill had proposed appearance of President Jonathan for the State of the Nation Address before the joint session of the National Assembly in the second week of July as practised in some other presidential democracies of the world, particularly that of the United States of America. But President Jonathan, in a letter addressed to the Senate President, David Mark, dated 10th June 2013, said there was no need for the bill as its intention has already been taken care of by section 67 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, aside some of the bill’s provisions running contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and legislature.
