I think the main problem of the Nigerian worker is that we no longer have brave comrades who can wrestle with the powers that be and get workers' rights. Take a look at the states that implemented the 18,000 minimum wage. How many really did it? What have the labour leaders done? Just take a bribe and damn the workers. It should not matter to the workers whether it is the state or federal government that fixes salaries IF WE ARE SURE OUR TRUSTED LABOUR LEADERS WILL NOT BETRAY OUR CAUSE ON SIGHTING APPETIZING,RED PORRIDGE. the Nlc is like toothless bulldog, just whining! Their struggle have always been off point, increase wages, increase salaries all the time, forgetting that the resulting inflationary effect will make nonsense of any gain to be derived from the raise... What the Nlc and Tuc should be doing is seeking to harmonize the prices of commodities in the open market, and fighting to reduce labour hours especially in the private sector where labour exploitation is most prominent, instead you see them whining about things that makes no sense, if we had a formidable NlC/TUC would people be paid 18k a month? that one fit buy food stuff sef talk more of accomodation, transport and other expenses? 2 Likes |

Ok, if I understand this guy, he is trying to say that wages should remain in the exclusive list of the FG and not devolved to states to legislate on. This clamour raise more questions than answers: 1. How does this position reconcile with NLC position of weaker center and stronger states- Federalism? 2. Is NLC suggesting by this struggle that they trust the FG more than the states that are closer to them? 3. Everyone, including the NLC believes that there is corruption in Nigeria. Normally, bringing government closer to the people reduces the incidence of corruption as the people are closer to the managers of the resources. Can the NLC explain why they don't want the State governments that will pay the salary to be the ones they will negotiate the deals with? Could this be because they are more comfortable discussing with the FG than their state governments? 4. How does this clamour perform when placed side-by-side with the clamour for an independent LG? In fact, what is NLC definition of democracy, federalism and seperation of powers? I asked these questions because in this country, people like to make empty noise. I don't just get it. Why would Labour minister negotiate a salary deal with the NLC while the salary will be paid in Ekiti from Ekiti purse with all the peculiarities of Ekiti environment which the Labour minister and even the NLC leaders at the negotiation table may not be privy to? I probably need more information to take a position on this issue, but it doesn't just make sense to me on the face value. 7 Likes |

Comrade umar is just too weak for that position... The best thing he could do right now for nigerian workers is to resign for a rugged man to mount that position. Daz all |

These over paid senators should focus on implementing policies that raise the standard of living instead of directly causing the opposite. Is federal minimum wage not the way civilized societies run? I don't understand these people oo; Nigeria is already swimming in shit, and their clever-only-old-men-have-wisdom idea is to flush us farther down the drain |

Frank-C:Yes you probably need more information, and a pair of glasses as well. Where in the original post did it mention a labour minister negotiating a salary deal with the NLC? And BTW, federalism has nothing to do with minimum wage 1 Like |

NLC is always talking of wage increase, they have never spoken about employee productivity, they have also never spoken about the unemployed. To be frank is better to employ 100 people with 10k salary each than to employ 10 with 100k salary. Furthermore if there is minimum wage I think is in order to have maximum wage. It is very unfair to have someone collecting 18k and some collecting 1M . @ topic I sopport decentalization |

crackhaus: I am afraid you have not addressed the concerns i raised. You seem to have no idea about the status quo that the bill is attempting to change. Few facts that exist today include: 1. FG via the Minister of Labour negotiates trade and labour deals with NLC, including the 18k minimum wage. This is how NLC comes about the Agreements that they always accuse government of not implementing. 2. Did I hear you say that Federalism have nothing to do with minimum wage in Nigerian context? You seem to be divorced from reality. The issue in question here is that National Assembly want to change the status quo by moving trade deal negotiation from the exclusive list of FG responsibility and devolving same to the State governments House of Assemblies (concurrent legislative list). Devolving Federal powers to States does not just have 'something' to do with federalism, it alters the very structure of the federalism we practise. Trade deals with Labour body (collective bargaining) is what establish the minimum wage figure in the first place. That process seem to be insufficient as FG and few States are able to honour it for her workers but many other states said they cannot honor it because of paucity of funds and there is no legal mechanism in place that get States to dictate to the FG what they can pay that will guide the negotiation process. Today, some States can pay minimum wage but others cannot pay it and the Senate in their wisdom want to solve the problem from the root. Let the States decide with Labor what they can pay. As i said earlier, I have not taken or canvassing a position on this issue but just presenting my understanding of the issue on ground. If anybody have an insight into labor logic for resisting this move, please I will like to read it. 1 Like |

The senate should first of all reduce some of the unnecessary allowance they collect in addition to the salaries. |
Re: NLC Faults Move To Change Minimum Wage Law by nanaboi(m): 2:44pm On Jul 01, 2013 |
@ Frank-C, do you honestly think some states "cannot" pay the minimun wage? If this law is struck off the Executive list as the OP suggested, trust me when I say that some state governments will do like NLC predicts - pay as loww as 1K. Why? I know some people used to earn as low as 3K before the minimum wage issue came to the rescue. If they go on ahead to decentralize and leave the bargain at the state level, there should still be a standard minimum it would be unlawful for any state - coz rili, no state is that poor - to go below. And to the person who groaned about N1m salary amounts. State the level of the recipient of such amounts if you have such info so you may be filled in on the qualifications for filling that position. Then will you know whetha or not to groan. |

Okija_juju: Minimum wage should be decentralised..I support u on dis, it shud b decentralised n fused into d concurrent list. All d NASS has to do is to make a legislation on dis decentralising d minimum wage stating d benchmark...so states cud vary d minimum wage payable in deir various states, provided dey don't go below d bordeline or benchmark. |
