Nigerian universities lack quality lecturers – NUC

Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, yesterday said universities in Nigeria lack the needed qualified manpower to steer the academic system to a level where they could produce quality graduates.

Okojie said presently, qualification of most lecturers in the system fell below internationally acceptable standard, adding that drastic measures needed to be taken if the country will achieve its Vision 2020 and the Millennium Development Goals.

The revelation came at at the NUC headquarters, during the approval of documents on establishment of the 32nd state university and the 93rd university in Nigeria, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, in Okitipupa, Ondo State.

Okojie said the issue of quality teachers in the nation’s university system cannot be taken lightly, because it is the quality of teaching that determines the quality of graduates an institution can produce.

“Today we are talking of the issue of the quality of teachers in the system, a survey which is the pyramid structure, revealed that the system is deformed. Today, we are expecting 20 per cent of the staff to be reader and above, 45per cent to be senior lecturer and others, lecturer grade 1 and below, but what do we have, 61per cent are lecturer grade 1 and below , so how can you fight a battle with scout masters?” he said.

Okojie, while presenting the approval of the new university to Governor Olusegun Agagu and members of the University Council, urged Ondo State government to invest in staff development and exchange programmes which, according to him, were very important aspects of quality assurance in the university system.

Responding, Agagu pledged that the University will have a maximum of 5000 students, so as to ensure that resources and facilities available on campus were not stretched beyond their limits.

When our leaders have refused to adequately pay lecturers, why won't experienced lecturers run away to greener pastures grin

If they are paid well the profession will be attractive and lecturers will be motivated to work harder and stop subjecting students to corruption.
