Not All Scholarships Are Merit-based… by Wumivic(m): 11:26am On Jul 05, 2013
Hello,

A common misconception about scholarships is that they are only available for the smartest students with the highest GPAs. However, this just isn’t even close to true. There are scholarships out there for every type of student seeking a university education whether undergraduates or post-graduates.

Scholarships may be classified into 10 primary groups but today I will give out only 5
1. Academic Scholarships
2. Need Scholarships
3. Sociology Scholarships
4. Athletic Scholarships
5. Scholarships for Women

1. Academic Scholarships
Academic scholarships are also often referred to as merit scholarships; though a merit scholarship can mean anything that has some level of contest to it. These are for the students with the 4.0 GPAs, years as part of several extracurricular activities and the well-rounded applications. They typically have the highest payouts and are considered very prestigious as they are often national awards.

2. Need Scholarships
This is financial aid for which the student and family’s financial situation is a primary factor in determining the recipient. Usually such scholarship will cover all or part of the tuition and may even cover living costs. Very often even need-based private scholarships require the awardees to be distinguished students, as the deed founding the award may include a phrase like “for the studies founder’s favourite subject in founder favourite institution of higher education for a talented youth of limited means from founder’s home town/country/state, etc.”

3. Sociology Scholarships
This is financial aid where applicants must initially qualify by race, religion, or national origin. After filtering the applicants based on their ethnicity, additional factors are taken into consideration to determine the final recipients.

4. Athletic Scholarships
For students with strong academics and physical skills, athletic scholarships are the way to go. There is practically a scholarship for every single sport, from volleyball to football; gymnastics to cheerleading. So, if you excel in anything physical, you should definitely pursue an athletic scholarship.

5. Scholarships for Women
There are scholarships specifically for women. Since universities were dominated by men for many years, scholarships have been created for strong, career-minded women that need assistance paying for universities expenses. If you are female, it is strongly recommended you pursue a scholarship for women. Moreover, scholarships for women are typically available in just about any field.

I will stop here today and continue next Tuesday.

Don’t allow anything to stop you from achieving your academic goals.
