Everything in life has competition, there is always someone out there who has made it to the top in that trade, there are too many who are aspiring to be like him thereby causing competition; so completion in whatever you do is very REAL!

But the good news is that the web is a powerful place where you can pretty much find out anything about anybody, any career, any industry and any product. That includes your potential market competition. It is good to check out your competition, not also for the same keywords you have with them, but a lot of other useful information.

You can learn a lot from their experiences: think about their blog customizations and the entire blog layout, the products that they offer, the content of their site, their SEO, etc.

Here are a few tools you can use to spy on your competitors:

- Alexa.com (type in a domain and get information on how much traffic they get. It is not always accurate, but it is a start. Download the toolbar for your browser)

-Compete.com (same concept of Alexa)

- SyFu (find out information about people that advertise with Google)

- KeyWordSpy.com (powerful tool for spying on your competitors Adwords campaigns)

- Archive.org (go back in time and find out what your competitors' sites looked like in the past. Useful to see their improvements)

- WHOISDomainTools.com (Run a WHOIS lookup on a domain and find out who they are, who their host is, and their address and phone number)

- Google Alert.com/alerts (Sign up and get notified by email whenever certain words are mentioned online. Spy on your competitors, their names, their products, and whatever it is that has made them who they are in the industry. Know what people are saying.

The information is out there for you to grab, and above all, the information are FREE.
You can often find out what kind of people visit their sites, how much traffic they get, and generally form a decent view of a potential market and audience before you even mess around with it.
