A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Dutse, on Wednesday sentenced three university graduates to three months imprisonment each for possessing fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letters.

Chief Magistrate Kabir Lamido sentenced Ale Oluwaseun, 25; Owolabi Saheed and Makinde Lanre, both aged 23, who pleaded guilty to the one count charge, during arraignment.

Lamido, however, gave each of them an option of N5, 000 fine and warned them to desist from illegal acts.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Garba Abdul, had earlier told the court that the three men came to an NYSC Orientation Camp with the fake letters and pretended to be intending corps members, adding that an employee of the NYSC, Ejibunu Zachary, reported the case to the Kubwa police area command on June 26.

He submitted that the offence contravened Section 366 of the Penal Code.

The graduates had pleaded for leniency, saying they were Nigerian graduates of the University of Cotonou, Benin Republic, desirous of serving their fatherland.

They said a man who claimed to be an official of the NYSC, issued the letters to them when they were making enquiries about the scheme.

Always on the headline for wrong reasons, NYSC has made it clear that except Hodegbe, all other Post Secondary school in Benin Rep ain't accredited, why ll an average Nigerian prefer to school in a Cotonou Uni? Even our glorified private universities here in Nigeria is better off..

Failing system and bad leadership in the country has made Nigerians too desperate for everything both at home and abroad.

The same glorified uni students are in their various schools learning and getting right connections and jobs alongside their counterparts abroad while your "off-campus" massive junks have been shut down due to lack of fund to maintain the lecturers (you guys think you can get QUALITY education with N25,000)


I'd rather send all my kids to a "glorified" university than a randy public school..

These are just the unlucky ones, for each one that is caught,10 must have been successful. Some of those corpers didn't even graduate from school, yet they served.
