manufacturer. Chrysler Corporation
owns the Jeep company and makes the
Jeep line of vehicles.
A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is a
class of vehicle. These are generally
made on a truck chassis with the
passenger compartment extended to use
what would have been the cargo box of
the truck. However there are some
small models of SUV that are made
with unibody construction like a car.
These small SUV models generally
lack the hauling ability of a full size
SUV and they generally suck off road.
Nearly every major automaker makes
some sort of SUV.
These are 2 completely different things.

Y can't we just accept that any high , big car with big tyres is a Jeep and that is understandable by most Nigerians.
If we start to call some car SUV then we get into another argument about which is SUV , CUV , Hatchback , Estate , GP, truck etc.
Let's make things easier so that we can concentrate on major issues in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In ur workplaces we may be specific but out on the street , get use to Jeep and move along

The answer is less than few or even none.

Mind u apart from SUV, we also have CUV, which is Crossover Utility Vehicle. E.g: RAV 4 & CRV. So not all high vehicles can be referred to as SUV.

And the full meaning of CRV is Comfortable Runabout Vehicle

It's not only Cherokee that use the brand name. I've seen several others, like Bronco Jeep, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep CJ, Laredo Jeep (also made by Cherokee)...

If I can recollect precisely, the craze for SUVs started in the early 80s, fueled particularly by the crave to create a new lifestyle by some young up-coming youth who wanted to differentiate themselves as nouveau rich.

Earlier before this, the SUV was primarily a preserved use of the military, police as well as construction, agricultural and minning companies on site. During the Biafran War, small type jeeps were allocated to Second Leutenants in the army as official vehicles up to the late 70s.

The everyday use of SUVs was at first exclusive to the sons of the truly rich in the early 80s. It was soon followed by copy-cat youth engaged in foreign currency peddling, a crime was that also known at the time as "Arrangee". Next was the drug peddlers who also wanted to be associated with the growing hordes of the rich.

The Laredo Jeep, made by Chrokee in the U. S. was the first craze in the early 80s. It soon became a vehicle everyone must own to be tagged as rich and young upward-moving (yuppie).

From then the SUV became a status symbol and remains so till today.
