The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement
Agency has said the South-West
geopolitical zone has the largest
cannabis plantations in the country,
with 1,404.27 hectares of cannabis
farmland destroyed in 2012.
Of this, Ekiti State tops the list of
states in the zone, with 764
hectares of cannabis farmland.
In data SUNDAY PUNCH obtained
from the Head, Public Affairs,
NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on
Friday, the agency said the
plantations were concentrated in
Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Ogun and Oyo
states.
It added that Delta and Edo states
in the South-South top the list of
states with the largest cannabis
farms from other zones.
NDLEA said, of the 8,052 drug
suspects arrested, North-West had
the highest with 2,185.
This was followed by South-West,
with 1,591; South-South, 1,480;
North-Central, 1,230; South-East,
960; and North-East, 606.
The agency seized 233,700kg of
narcotics in the year under review,
with the South-South having the
highest, with 106,676.716kg.
The South-West came second, with
94,036.265kg; North-Central,
14,472.309kg; North-West,
10,357.895kg; North-East,
4,548.268kg; and South-East,
3,608.309kg.
On the list of states with the largest
volume of drugs seized, Edo led with
81,541.71kg. Ondo had 61,246.35kg;
Delta, 23,418.48kg; Ogun,
8,469.99kg; Oyo, 7,232.08kg; and
Ekiti, 6,685.23kg.
Kano State recorded the highest
number of arrests, with 705
suspects – all males.
Katsina State came second, with 411
suspects —407 males and four
females. Plateau State recorded 384
arrests — 369 males and 15 females.
Ekiti State had 383 suspects — 349
males and 34 females.
Others include Lagos, with 321
suspects — 305 males and 16
females; Delta, 292 suspects — 243
males and 49 females.
Ofoyeju noted that the statistics
assisted the NDLEA in resources
allocation and personnel deployment
in line with the rating of the
geographical locations.
He added that it helped the agency
in planning raid operations and public
enlightenment campaign programmes.
Ofoyeju said, “The Chairman of the
NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, recently
posited that cannabis cultivation has
serious implication on national
economy and security.
“Cannabis eradication is one of our
priority concerns. It prevents
cannabis from struggling with
legitimate crops for arable land.
Incentive is taken from the drug
cartel, while legitimate farmers are
encouraged to grow food and cash
crops. Besides cutting off supply to
the trafficker and drug addicts,
cannabis control promotes national
economy and security.”

If marijuana cultivation is simply legalized in Nigeria, as has been done in many states in the USA, enormous revenue will accrue to government coffers, if the harvest is taxed just as is being done in California, Oregon and Wahington states right now.

Former American President Bill Clinton, and current President Barak Obama, both smoked marijuana COPIOUSLY in their youth, before rising to the pinnacle of political power as two of America's greatest leaders.

Obviously there has been a lot of mis-information about weed, but the fact remains that there has never been ONE single human death that has been attributed to marijuana overdose, throughout recorded history. The same cannot be said for alcohol, which annaully kills THOUSANDS of drinkers worldwide from liver cirrosis, overdose toxicity and a host of other medcial consequences incurred by excessive consumption of alcohol.

It is true studies do prove that marijuana OR ALCOHOL useage could have negative consequences for individuals already prone to mental illness, Zameen, but for every unstable person who was pushed over the edge from smoking weed, there are just thousands of alcohol addicts who succumbed to liver cirrosis or alcohol poisoning, innocent family members killed as collateral damage in car wrecks caused by drunk drivers, and numerous victims of violent acts carried out by drunk people.

The negative medical consequences that exist for users of marijuana pale in comparison to the MASS DEATH caused YEARLY by alcoholics drinking themselves to death slowly or quickly, while also killing others through felony aggression or traffic accidents, while drunk. Conversely in North America and Europe today, medical patients suffering from myriad ailments ranging from cancer and diabetes to arthritis owe their very lives to the LEGALLY prescribed marijuana that they consume to alleviate otherwise overpowering symptoms of their conditions.

Show me one person on planet Earth who can produce a medical doctor's prescription card for whisky, wine or gin, and I will show you a liar, or at best a forger with a sense of humor. On the other side of the coin, medically prescribed marijuana today keeps alive tens of thousands of Americans, such that industrialized cultivation of the crop now generates multi-million dollar fortunes from which state governments reap huge tax dividends.

If there is a need to ban another widely used poison, as the price of legalizing marijuana, then let CIGARETTES and ALL nicotine-containing substances be outlawed, with TEN YEARS HARD LABOR for any person found smoking a cigarette in public. Yes sir. Ban the sale, possession and growing of tobbacco, and the world will be a FAR healthier place than it is now. Unike alcohol that can have token health benefits in MODERATE does, the medical or medicinal benefits of cigarettes are absolutely ZERO, and any society that declares tobacco use ILLEGAL would save billions of dollars in health-care costs, by eliminating that major killer of cigarette addicts worldwide.

When the cultivation of medicinal marijuana is legalized in Nigeria, a good many of the finger-pointers today heaping scorn on South West Nigeria will join the stampede of emergency farmers seeking arable land in Yoruba land, in the hopes of exploting the lucrative market in Ekiti Golden Bud, Ondo Haze, Abeokuta Train-Wreck, Lagos Lobotomy, Shomolu Super Skunk, Ajegunle Amnesia, and other soon-to-be legendary brand names of connoisseur-grade marijuana.
