For very many small militaries, Paras constitute an elite capability. Patchesagain will disagree vehemently, but I think we should change our ORBAT. I think 1Parabat should be a strategic asset - Support Unit to the Recces, if you like. Akin to the US 3/75 Rangers as a SOF unit.
The Army can raise up 2Parabat as an elite unit under their direct command. The Pathfinders - a company of Parabats currently trained up to almost Recce standard - can stay with the Army as 2Parabat's operational link with the Recces.

Where applicable, equip 1Parabat same as the Recces, acquire economies of scale and get everything cheaper as you're no longer buying for less than about 300 men but for a battalion.

And while you're at it, do the same thing with the Marines, as that's where 4 Recce is now attracting most of their recruits.
Just my thoughts, but what do I know, I'm a lowly cog who's thinking of going into civvie street soon.

We only operate it on our naval platforms, and have sold it to the Finland and Algeria Navies. The Army partly funded the ground platform and will take it into service when funds allow. In the meantime, SAAB's been so impressed they signed a deal with Denel to pair it with the SAAB AMB Giraffe radar. So countries in favour with the West will get it as Denel Umkhonto + SAAB Giraffe; and those out of favour will get the completely SA solution of Denel Umkhonto + Reutech radar.

Just like the Paramount AHRLAC: US-approved clients get AHRLAC + Boeing Mission System; non-ITAR get AHRLAC + Paramount Mission System - same one on Airbus military systems.

Thanks, so what's the current main ADS being used by SANDF?

I'm pre-occupied with something else at the moment, so I'll just give you the wiki link. I'll be able to answer any further questions in 30 mins.

"By deception we wage war"; "be-tachbūlōt ta`aseh lekhā milchāmāh"; (Hebrew: בתחבולות תעשה לך מלחמה‎).

Until recently this was Mossad's motto. Nothing's changed, it seems.
Now it appears we may get UN approval to sell Umkhonto GBADS to Iran, suddenly stories appear about terror plots involving Palestinians, Iran and South Africa.

I'll end this with another quote:

"Oh what a tangled web we weave when at first we start to deceive."

Remember the time Mossad got the US to bomb Libya in the 90s by placing a radio transmitter near Gaddafi's compound that played pre-recorded terrorist messages and shouting "look terrorists!"

Or how Israel bombed a US intelligence ship because it was keeping too close an eye on Isrealy maneuvers

The list just goes on and on and on... They seem to be particularly fond of fvcking over their American allies though.

We have the capability and the forces for it. Problem is the command structure - I'm in planning after all. In Bangui we had 2 lines of reporting and that was just 250 Parabats, a training team of about 75 and a small detachment of SF. The result was 75 pax cooling off at the airport and not helping because their orders were different, amongst other issues. The lesson learned was never to put troopers in harm's way without adequate fire-power.

The greater lesson about the centrality of a simplified, effective clearly defined C2 structure has been given short thrift, IMPO.
Must run. Back in 30 min.

So much for back in 30 minutes. I can now disclose we were monitoring fresh disturbances on the Equatorial Guinea - Cameroun border. A company of armed men apparently entered EG, a firefight ensued and the Camerounians scrambled to seal the border to prevent their escape. Among the dead are Chadians, Sudanese and CAR nationals (same composition as Seleka); the rest fled into the EG jungle.
Unconfirmed reports that the Chadian ambassador to EG has been detained.

Nigeria is actually going to have backup communication satelites in orbit. That's cool.

Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu.
Nigeria’s Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, says Nigeria will procure two new satellites from China at the cost of 550million dollars.

The minister made the disclosure while briefing State House Correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday.

According to him, the initial plan was for Nigeria to pay 15 percent of $550 million ($82 million) as counterpart funding for the production of the satellites, but because it could not raise the amount, the contract was renegotiated with the China EXIM Bank and the China Great Wall.

He said the satellite manufacturers had agreed to pay the entire $550 million to procure two new satellites.

Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited had in 2015 opened talks with China for the financing and construction of two new communication satellites at a cost of $701 million.

The new satellites, to be known as NigComSat-2 and NigComSat-3, are to serve as backup to the country’s existing communications satellite, NigComSat-1R, which was put in the orbit in December 2011.

The government targets to market the satellite services to Nigerian companies as well as across the African continent.

The minister said that two satellites will be ready in two years after the signing of the agreement by the end of this month.
