no wonder we needed Cubans to fight for our fellow Africans

What benefit would fighting for ethiopia bring us?

If two African states want to fight it out, then fine, let them fight... its not in SADAC and it has nothing to do with us.

South Africa does not waste blood or treasure for fun.

They SU-27s while we operated the Cheetah.

Sensors and EW capabilities always gave the SAAF the upper hand.

Guy what EW capabilities are you taking about?

I never new your sensors on Cheetah were better than the 1s on SU 27.
Even in this modern day SU27 will still face your Gripens.

Stop trying to fool us here, we are not kids.

Another political move which will damage the SAAF and the career of those pilots in the force.

Though the decision was political, I still think this could work for us if we play our cards right. I just hope our Government and people will try juggling the West and East as well as India , because they are doing it brilliantly, they have a good relationship with both sides.

I won't lie it would be awesome to see Su-35s or Mig-35s in S.A colours and maybe we could also do some SuperHind style upgrades on them, mixing western and eastern tech.

This Is a great opportunity for us because we're no longer expect to take sides, like in the past.

It would be great to add Some Locally built Su-35s because Russia will allow that for the right price ofcourse.

Don't look at it as the end of the world.

The only thing Russia has to offer that we dont allready have in terms of combat platforms is the Su34

The origional 1998 Defence Reveiwed for a compliment of heavy fighters (ie: Twin-engine air-superiority) but I doubt that will be acheivable for a very long time even if the nee DR is implimented

The only thing Russia has to offer is the Il-38 MPA, Let L-410, Il-78 Midas, Be-200 and tech transfer for things like Ratnik and some of their missile tech relating to improvements of range (since Denel is mainly focusing on improving the range of the Uhmkonto and A-darter in terms of the next development cycle).

Apart from that Russia has nothing that the West or Denel does not have a better version of.

To be completely honest the only thing that would make sense is some sort of tech transfer/patent rights for the Ratnik body armor system as it would slot neatly into the African warrior program. It would cut R&grin costs dramatically and is a highly capable system - all that is required is some fine tuning for African conditions and it would be ready to go.

The Russians brought the SU-35 to SA and held exercises with the SAAF in the 90s.

it would be a bad choice buying them.

The skill to improve the ranges of those missiles is still here.

Currently Denel only invests in tactical missiles.

If we wanted longer range ones a ram-jet would ve used. Remember the picture of the IR guided AAM with ram-jet engine?

at the moment south would be better off not buying fighter planes but use those funds in the production of more rooivalk helicopter gunships, having seen the fruits of its development in the DRC .This is the most likely aircraft to be needed by the UN in most insurgencies exploding in africa .if today kenya was to acquire between SU-30 jet or MI-28 gunship ,i would rather we acquired MI-28 gunships. africa is more likely to face insurgencies than war between states ,now and in the future

Russian Su-30SM performed a Visual ID intercept on a U.S. plane over Syria

On Oct. 10, a Russian Su-30SM belonging to the contingent deployed to Latakia, in Syria, had a close encounter with a unspecified U.S. combat plane supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, the Flanker-derivative 4++ Gen aircraft was providing air escort for a package of attack planes in Syria when it approached the American plane, to perform a VID (Visual Identification).

The intercept “was not aimed at scaring off the US aircraft.”

According to RT, the Su-30SM, operating in Aleppo province, “detected radiation emitted from an unidentified aircraft and approached it to identify the bogie [unidentified aircraft in interceptor’s lingo].”

So, the aircraft was at an estimated distance of 2-3 km, when it detected the American plane and closed on it, to visually identify the unknown traffic. After the VID, the Russian plane rejoined the other aircraft it was escorting and continued its mission.

Nothing special then, besides the fact that these close encounters are exploited to collect some intelligence about the counterpart’s weapons systems: radio frequencies, sensors emissions and all the stuff ISR (intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance) platforms can collect from distance.

Su-30SMs have been pretty active with their still largely unknown Bars-R radar, possibly exposing its “signature” to the ESM (Electronic Support Measure) sensors of nearby aircraft: few days ago, a Russian Flanker locked-on a TuAF F-16 for more than 5 minutes!

As already reported, this is not the first time Russian and U.S. aircraft come close to one another in the increasingly crowded airspace over Syria. In a few such incidents, Russian warplanes tailed U.S. Predator drones, at least a couple of times American aircraft reportedly changed their routing to deconflict with Russian aircraft.

Kidnapped Kenyan teacher rescued in Somalia in joint operation

Judy Mutua, a Kenyan teacher who was kidnapped by Al-Shabaab in Garissa county on Monday, October 12, has been rescued in Somalia.

One of the abductors was killed in the rescue operation by the Kenya Defence Forces, the Rapid Deployment Unit of the Administration Police and the Somalia National Army. Another abductor was arrested.
The operation took place at Shaba, Difu, which is 15 kilometres into Somalia.
"Ms Mutua is currently undergoing treatment at a secured location and will be airlifted to Nairobi by the Kenya Air Force in the course of the day," KDF said in a statement.
The rescue took place at 10am on Friday.
Ms Mutua was kidnapped at the Hagadera refugee camp in Dadaab. She is an employee of Windle Trust International, an NGO.

First off: Beleiving RT, ever shocked

Second: NATO pilots have standing orders to maintain a minimum distance of 20km from Russian jets over Syria. So i doubt that they would let a Russian get so close.

Conclusion: Meh, its all propaganda at this point (from all parties involved). The bullsh1t is stacked so high in Syria that I am suprised the jets are able to fly over it grin

Agreed.

But restarting production isn't that easy.

SAAF uses an Oryx at times as a gunship. Used in Lesetho at the Katse dam when the basotho refused to surrender and opened fire on the lads trying to give them pamphlets.
