The US Government is determined to ease the visa application process for Nigerian applicants, according to a statement by the US Consul-General, Mr. Jeffery Hawkins on August 7.

The statement was included in a paper he presented at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos, on US and Nigeria bilateral relationship. The change, as Mr. Hawkins stated, is part of the government’s effort to strengthen “people-to-people” relationships between the two countries.

Accordingly, the consulate has increased staff members and installed new equipment in order to facilitate and fasten US visa application processing for Nigerian applicants.

“My goal is to make visa application process painless and pleasant for Nigerians,” said Mr. Hawkins, “I am happy to say that the waiting time for Non-Immigrant Visa appointment is now just a fraction of what it once was.”



“We can always improve; but I am proud of the work we have done to serve our Nigeria visa applicants,” he added.

Hawkins said that the US government would continue to maintain its bilateral relationship with Nigeria in the coming years. Giving more details, the envoy said that the US government had proposed an arrangement to invite a “very special set of Nigerian guests” to the US in 2014.
