She slowly made her way across the backyard of the gigantic house that had become her prison since she turned thirteen. The thick veil she draped across every inch of her skin (except her face which was covered by a lighter veil) everyday was unbearably stifling. She didn’t bother to wipe away the tears that trickled down her cheeks as she remembered her younger days. Days spent in the fields with her father and elder brothers. She remembered those days as the happiest days of her life. Carefree days in the sun, planting the staple foods that had supported her family since she could remember; sorghum, millet, corn and wheat. Her father always had a sharp reprimand for her when she got carried away in play.
‘’Amina, make sure you finish your share of the work before you start playing again’’
She would sulk as she continued her work.
And when they got home in the evening, she would spend a good time playing with her friends while the boys went to study at the feet of the revered scholar of Kazaure Sheikh Umar Gamjas. the girls never had any education, her father considered it a waste. ‘’women are not to be educated, they are good for bringing children into the world’’ he would always say.
After the evening meal, which the females had in their hut behind the main hut, she would sit at the older women’s feet and hear stories of the conquests of her ancestors. Wars that were fought and victories won on the battlefield by sheer strength and courage.
‘’you have some of their blood in you’’ she would tell her ‘’if only you would be less stubborn, you would really do very well’’. Amina always thought that there was a hint of sadness in her voice.

And it was her stubborness that proved to be her ultimate undoing….
