By d way, there was dis big white beans I used to buy in Awka few yrs ago dat usually took a short time to boil. I think it was called "iron beans". Why does brown beans take so long?

Believe it or not, my mum usually puts a big nail (carpenter own. No b fingernail o) into her pot of beans to help it boil quicker. She removes d nail before addin any oil & ingredients. But I dey fear sey dat method no dey safe.

So pls cud anyone suggest other ways of makin beans boil quicker. E go help me save time plus my kerosene or gas abeg, biko, ejo, mbok.

boil beans with hot water.......and putting nails in beans is very bad, because that nail is poisonous and dangerous to health too.

Beans cook really fast if you dont add salt at the beginning. Add your salt and oil when the beans is completely done (soft). For even faster cooking add sliced onion at the beginning.

Ive noticed that the very dark brown beans takes a long time to cook but the light brown beans cooks on time. So op while buying brown beans go for the light brown. Just like *cold blooded* said

when l attended a program on domestic energy production and conservation here in kenya, we were encouraged to soak food like beans hours before cooking to save energy when it cooked.

Do not add salt to beans while its in the process of cooking, because it makes the beans stay longer on fire. Add it after the beans is cooked.
Also, you can salt petre to the beans. We call it kanwe/(a) in Ghana. Your beans will cook faster.
You can also soak it in water for some hours before cooking it.

Caribbean's soak them from the night before.

Add lots of onions and garlic (that's if you eat garlic)

nothing is faster tgan a pressure pot use one pending on the quantity after parboiling your beans for 10- 15mins use d pressure cooker to finish d process takes 30 mins @ most

I have equally noticed over time that brown beans have diff species which make them get done at different cooking times.I prefer white beans but not the iron species. I add plenty onions after discarding the first 10 mins boil.this makes it boil in less than 45 mins.just try it.
